We’re best known for our iconic bakes, fresh sandwiches, delicious hot drinks and sweet treats. Over eighty years ago, John Gregg started out with one goal: to deliver (by pushbike) fresh eggs and yeast to the families of Newcastle. Ten years later, he chained up his bike and opened Greggs of Gosforth.
Since then, we’ve opened more and more shops and have become something of a Nation’s sweetheart. Our menu has also changed with the nation’s taste. Long-standing Greggs fans among us may even remember the olden days before the hotly debated Vegan Roll, or our refreshing iced drinks.

The moment I walked up to the counter, I was greeted with a genuine smile—honestly, that feels like a rarity these days. What really touched my heart was watching the staff member in the next line interact with a little boy ordering with his mom. She was so patient and kind to him; seeing the boy so happy truly warmed my soul and turned my whole day around. Five-star staff and a wonderful atmosphere. Thank you for the great mood!

This seems to be the accepted standard of customer service from Greggs, across the three branches (in different towns) I have visited recently. What happens to your leftover food?
We’ve been donating unsold food for a long time. Originally our bakeries would team up with large charities who would help distribute it to smaller organisations.
This process remains in place, though we’ve also worked hard to increase the amount of unsold food donated by our shops and we currently support a network of 1,077 local good causes.
In 2022, we redistributed 1,800 tonnes of unsold food through our Outlet shops. A share of the profits from the outlets, totalling £450,000, was then donated back into the communities we serve.
