I am writing to make a formal complaint about the unacceptable and humiliating treatment my wife and I experienced during our visit to the Tesco Staines Elmsleigh store.
After completing our shopping, we went to the checkout where a member of staff named Jasmine asked me to open my bag for inspection. I fully cooperated and opened my bag. After checking it, she found nothing suspicious.
Despite this, she then called the team leader, Arfen. Without asking for my wife’s permission or explaining what he was doing, he immediately reached into my wife’s handbag and began touching and searching through her personal belongings himself. We found this behaviour extremely intrusive, disrespectful, and humiliating.
We understand that stores have security procedures, and we are willing to cooperate when treated with respect. However, there is a significant difference between asking a customer to open their bag and physically putting hands into someone’s personal belongings without consent. This was completely unacceptable and left us feeling embarrassed and deeply upset.
No customer should be made to feel like a criminal without any justification, especially after cooperating fully with staff. The way we were treated has completely destroyed our confidence in this store.
I would appreciate it if Tesco would investigate this incident, review the actions of the staff involved, and explain what policies are in place regarding bag checks and the handling of customers’ personal belongings. I would also like to know what steps will be taken to ensure that no other customer has to experience such treatment.
As a result of this incident, we do not feel comfortable returning to this store.
