Greggs is a British food to go brand, specialising in fresh bakes, sandwiches, hot drinks and sweet treats. Founded in 1939, Greggs started out selling eggs and yeast by pushbike, ten years later the first shop opened on Gosforth High Street, in Newcastle. Now, over 80 years later Greggs is a household name thanks to their tasty Sausage Rolls, Steak Bakes, Chicken Bakes, Doughnuts, Yum Yums and freshly ground Fairtrade Coffee. With shops across the UK, you're never far away from a Greggs. And with new offerings like Click + Collect and delivery to your door with Just Eat, it's never been easier to get your flakey fix. The Greggs App gives customers tasty rewards every time they shop. From sandwiches to sweet treats, hot drinks and bakes, each time you buy a product, you'll get a stamp. Collect nine stamps in a category, and the tenth item will be free. New customers can also get a free hot drink of their choice, just for downloading the app. The Greggs Foundation aims to build stronger, healthier communities across nine principle programmes including 'The Breakfast Club programme', which helps primary school children get a nutritious start to their school day. Today there are over 680 Breakfast Clubs across the UK, serving wholesome, free breakfasts to around 44,000 children every school day- that's 8.5 million meals a year.

I just wanted some quick evening food after a long day out, and turned up to Greggs in Reading with a full hour left before closing. The shop was completely empty not a single item left. In a middle‑class commute town where people finish late and rely on places like this, how is it acceptable to have no food at all an hour before shutting
I’m not saying staff need to be superheroes, but I used to work in fast food, and I mastered running a unit properly. I would never have been allowed to let things get to this point. End of day prep doesn’t mean giving up early. It doesn’t mean empty shelves while customers walk in hungry. And it definitely doesn’t mean four staff members standing around doing nothing.
What frustrates me most is that this is such a simple issue to fix. You shouldn’t need a supervisor to tell you to put more food on earlier in the evening that’s basic shift awareness. And when there’s no manager around to speak to, it just feels like no one is taking responsibility for the customer experience at all.
I’m not writing this to be harsh for the sake of it. I work hard, and I know how these places should run. I actually want this store to do well. But right now, the planning, the stock management, and the customer service just aren’t good enough. If you’re constantly running out an hour before closing, either improve the stock levels or adjust the hours. Don’t leave customers walking into an empty shop with staff who’ve clearly checked out early.

I came in Monday late afternoon after quite a long day out, staff member Leo was super friendly and made me feel welcome giving the store a nice atmosphere. Not to mention I spilled my coffee by mistake and they were quick to offer me a new one and clean up. Best greggs experience I've had.

What happens to your leftover food?
We’ve been donating unsold food for a long time. Originally our bakeries would team up with large charities who would help distribute it to smaller organisations.
This process remains in place, though we’ve also worked hard to increase the amount of unsold food donated by our shops and we currently support a network of 1,077 local good causes.
In 2022, we redistributed 1,800 tonnes of unsold food through our Outlet shops. A share of the profits from the outlets, totalling £450,000, was then donated back into the communities we serve.
We’re no longer taking new applications for end-of-day food donation partners, but we continue to identify regions where our shops could support a local charitable collection. To find out more or nominate an organisation visit: https://www.greggsfoundation.org.uk/unsold-food-donations.
Why do you have different prices regionally?
It is very common for retailers to have regional prices. This is because the costs of running a business can vary across different parts of the country and in certain locations, for example rent costs. We always keep our prices as low as possible for our customers.
