Greggs is a British food to go brand, specialising in fresh bakes, sandwiches, hot drinks and sweet treats. Founded in 1939, Greggs started out selling eggs and yeast by pushbike, ten years later the first shop opened on Gosforth High Street, in Newcastle. Now, over 80 years later Greggs is a household name thanks to their tasty Sausage Rolls, Steak Bakes, Chicken Bakes, Doughnuts, Yum Yums and freshly ground Fairtrade Coffee. With shops across the UK, you're never far away from a Greggs. And with new offerings like Click + Collect and delivery to your door with Just Eat, it's never been easier to get your flakey fix. The Greggs App gives customers tasty rewards every time they shop. From sandwiches to sweet treats, hot drinks and bakes, each time you buy a product, you'll get a stamp. Collect nine stamps in a category, and the tenth item will be free. New customers can also get a free hot drink of their choice, just for downloading the app. The Greggs Foundation aims to build stronger, healthier communities across nine principle programmes including 'The Breakfast Club programme', which helps primary school children get a nutritious start to their school day. Today there are over 680 Breakfast Clubs across the UK, serving wholesome, free breakfasts to around 44,000 children every school day- that's 8.5 million meals a year.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Culinary Pilgrimage to the Stapleford Monolith.
Let it be known across the East Midlands that I did not choose the Greggs life; the Greggs life chose me. Specifically, on a rain-lashed Tuesday morning in Stapleford, when the wind was blowing sideways down the Derby Road and my soul was running on approximately 4% battery.
I crossed the threshold into this sanctuary of golden pastry, and the olfactory symphony that hit me was nothing short of a spiritual awakening. It smelled of melted cheese, ambient anxiety, and pure, unadulterated British triumph.
The Morning Crew: Angels in Hairnets.
Before we even discuss the carbohydrate bounty, we must talk about the morning staff. They are, without a shadow of a doubt, second to none.
It is 7:35 AM. It is dark. It is miserable outside. Most of the clientele (myself included) have the conversational skills and facial expressions of extras from The Walking Dead. Yet, the heroes behind the counter are beaming. They serve every single person with a genuine, dazzling smile that somehow cuts through the early morning fog.
I watched the worker behind the till bag up three bakes, a glazed donut, and a flat white in 4.2 seconds flat—all while maintaining the kind of warm, empathetic eye contact usually reserved for a long-lost relative. They operate with the speed and precision of a pit crew at the British Grand Prix, but with 100% more hospitality. They aren't just serving breakfast; they are performing emotional rescue work for the sleep-deprived citizens of Stapleford. Give them a Victoria Cross.
The Ambience.
The queue was a beautiful cross-section of society. You had tradesmen in high-vis jackets staring at the hot counter with the intense, romantic longing of a Romeo beneath a balcony. You had school kids counting out loose change with the desperation of Wall Street traders during a market crash. The atmosphere was tense but respectful. We all knew why we were here. We were here to survive.
The Main Event: The Steak Bake.
I ordered the Steak Bake. Now, eating a Greggs pastry is an extreme sport. It exists in only two physical states:
1. Liquid Magma: Fresh out of the oven, capable of welding your tongue to the roof of your mouth and stripping your DNA.
2. Absolute Zero: Frozen in the center like a culinary glacier.
By some miracle of Stapleford wizardry, mine was in the mythical "Goldilocks Zone." The gravy was rich enough to buy a semi-detached house in Notts. The pastry flaked everywhere. I mean everywhere. I took one bite and looked like I’d been caught in a localized blizzard of flour and lard. It ruined my coat. It’s now deep inside my car vents. I expect to be vacuuming up remnants of this bake when my grandkids are learning to drive. 10/10.
The Sausage Roll: A Legend Recounted.
Next, the iconic Sausage Roll. It is the architectural marvel of the modern world. How they manage to wrap a seasoned pork dreamscape into something that fits perfectly into a coat pocket for "later consumption" (read: 30 seconds later in the car) is beyond science. It was savory, it was salty, it was everything my doctor explicitly told me to avoid.
Pro-Tip: If you ask the morning crew nicely, they will pass it to you with such grace it feels like a baton handoff at the Olympics.
The Verdict.
Did I leave with flaky pastry stuck to my face like a sad, buttery beard? Yes. Did I experience a minor sodium-induced hallucination on the walk back to the car? Also yes. Will I be back tomorrow morning to be blinded by the radiant smiles of the morning shift? Unquestionably.
Stapleford Greggs isn't just a bakery. It’s the glue holding this community together. One lukewarm pastry and one brilliant morning smile at a time.

What happens to your leftover food?
We’ve been donating unsold food for a long time. Originally our bakeries would team up with large charities who would help distribute it to smaller organisations.
This process remains in place, though we’ve also worked hard to increase the amount of unsold food donated by our shops and we currently support a network of 1,077 local good causes.
In 2022, we redistributed 1,800 tonnes of unsold food through our Outlet shops. A share of the profits from the outlets, totalling £450,000, was then donated back into the communities we serve.
We’re no longer taking new applications for end-of-day food donation partners, but we continue to identify regions where our shops could support a local charitable collection. To find out more or nominate an organisation visit: https://www.greggsfoundation.org.uk/unsold-food-donations.
Why do you have different prices regionally?
It is very common for retailers to have regional prices. This is because the costs of running a business can vary across different parts of the country and in certain locations, for example rent costs. We always keep our prices as low as possible for our customers.
