We had a meal at The Plough. Dining area was relaxing. A very nice ambience and feel to the place. Food was excellent. My Husband was very impressed with the Cheese board. Our server was Daniel, very attentive and welcoming...A Great asset to the Restuarant.

I chose to stay at the Plough for 2 nights based on its location, which is excellent- 2 minutes walk from Barter books and 5 minutes walk from Alnwick gardens. Other positives were the warm welcome from Bex and the generous sized shower gel, shampoo etc in the bathroom. Unfortunately that is the end of the positives! My room was very small, the double bed took up virtually all the floor space. The window was very high up- I couldn't see out of it, giving the impression of a prison cell. As the room was stuffy, I wanted to open the window...this involved moving the chest of drawers, standing on tip toe and reaching up with a coat hanger to push the window up. I thought the cleanliness was ok, until I noticed the drain in the shower was full of other people's hair- it obviously hadnt been cleaned for sometime. There was no breakfast on offer- fortunately the excellent cafe at Barter Books opened at 9am so I had breakfast there. On arrival I was astonished to be told that between 9pm and 12 midday access to the room was via the fire escape- 2 steep flights of steps at the rear of the hotel. There were no staff on site during these hours and as check out was at 10 they were expecting guests to carry their suitcases down the fire escape. This is surely an accident waiting to happen. Fortunately as I was leaving Alnwick in the afternoon, Bex arranged for my bag to be brought down the internal stairs (blocked off by a locked door 9pm-12 midday) when the staff came on at 12 for me to collect later. There was no mention of this odd arrangement on the website or when booking. There was no dinner on offer (apparently the new chef and team appointed in Feb have just left), so there no option but to go out for dinner and navigate the fire escape on return. The whole place needs sorting out!

I stopped here with my sisters the day before my wedding. We were awake early to get ready, so we went out the back door for breakfast as instructed. When we returned, the key fob wouldn't grant us access to the upper floor. We tried the lower back door; my fob didn't work there either, but luckily my sister's did. However, when we reached the top floor, we were met with another locked door separating us from our rooms. We were locked out from 6:30 AM until around 7:30–8:00 AM, when another guest luckily let us back in. We called the emergency number countless times, but the phone was turned off. To make matters worse, we were kicked out at 10:00 AM, presumably by the cleaner. I am beyond disappointed by this experience and will never come back. This situation was incredibly distressing and nearly ruined my wedding day. The location is fine and the rooms are beautifully decorated, but the shower is poor quality and incredibly loud, as is flushing the toilet.

I had a confirmed booking at The Plough, Alnwick (ID: 648163191) through Agoda, but upon arrival, I found the premises locked, the building deserted, and no staff present. Despite there being no specified check-in cutoff time on my booking, the hotel failed to provide any entry instructions and ignored every call I made that night. With no other local accommodation available at that hour, I was forced to sleep in my car. The hotel’s conduct afterward was even more shameful: they only answered the phone once weeks later to state that a "manager" would need to approve a refund, before going completely silent and ignoring both my inquiries and Agoda’s for over a month. It is dangerous and utterly unprofessional to accept a guest's payment only to leave them stranded at a locked door in the middle of the night. Do not trust this business with your money or your safety; they are completely unreliable and lack any sense of basic accountability.
