About

BakeryGreggs
Greggs is a British food to go brand, specialising in fresh bakes, sandwiches, hot drinks and sweet treats. Founded in 1939, Greggs started out selling eggs and yeast by pushbike, ten years later the first shop opened on Gosforth High Street, in Newcastle. Now, over 80 years later Greggs is a household name thanks to their tasty Sausage Rolls, Steak Bakes, Chicken Bakes, Doughnuts, Yum Yums and freshly ground Fairtrade Coffee. With shops across the UK, you're never far away from a Greggs. And with new offerings like Click + Collect and delivery to your door with Just Eat, it's never been easier to get your flakey fix. The Greggs App gives customers tasty rewards every time they shop. From sandwiches to sweet treats, hot drinks and bakes, each time you buy a product, you'll get a stamp. Collect nine stamps in a category, and the tenth item will be free. New customers can also get a free hot drink of their choice, just for downloading the app. The Greggs Foundation aims to build stronger, healthier communities across nine principle programmes including 'The Breakfast Club programme', which helps primary school children get a nutritious start to their school day. Today there are over 680 Breakfast Clubs across the UK, serving wholesome, free breakfasts to around 44,000 children every school day- that's 8.5 million meals a year.

I visited Greggs today at around 3:30pm and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience with the customer service. When I arrived, there were two members of staff at the counter. One staff member was serving a customer, while the other male staff member appeared to be checking online orders. I politely asked him if he could serve me as I was running late for an appointment. I am 9 months pregnant, which was also quite obvious, but he told me that I would have to wait for the other staff member. I accepted this and waited. A few minutes later, he eventually asked what I wanted. I ordered a chicken bake and a large tea. He told me they had run out of large cups, so I said that was fine and asked for a regular tea instead. When I received the tea, I could see that it was just plain tea with no milk. As this was my first time ordering tea from Greggs, I asked him why there was no milk and explained that I wanted milk in it. He told me to get it myself. The cup was already very full, and because I was rushing to my appointment, I asked if he could kindly give me another cup so I could transfer some of the tea and add the milk. He said he couldn’t do that and didn’t know where I was supposed to put the milk. Another customer kindly pointed out where I could pour the tea. When I opened the cup, because it was so full, the tea spilled over my hand. I was already frustrated and in a rush. I then went to add the milk, only to find that there was no milk in the jug. I told the staff member there was no milk and he told me to bring him the jug. I did so, and reminded him that I had already explained that I was running late for my appointment and was only trying to quickly sort my drink because I was hungry. He then said, “You were supposed to know there was no milk in there.” I found this very frustrating because checking and maintaining the supplies is the responsibility of the staff, not the customer. He then took his time pouring the milk and closing everything up while I was clearly rushing. Another customer even commented on how long he was taking. I eventually said that he could see I was in a hurry and that he was taking his time. He then told me not to be rude to him. I genuinely don’t believe I was rude to him. I did not swear at him, insult him or use any offensive language. I was simply frustrated because I had repeatedly explained that I was late and was trying to get my food and drink quickly. I also noticed that the blue roll used to clean the jug was left inside the jug, which I didn’t even raise at the time because I was already running late. Because of the whole situation, I didn’t even have time to add sugar to my tea. I couldn’t enjoy the drink and ended up throwing it away. The food was also cold. I understand that the weather is getting colder, so I didn’t make an issue of this at the time, although I would expect the food to be served at the appropriate holding temperature. I have been buying from Greggs for a while and have never experienced this kind of customer service before, which is why this was particularly disappointing. I understand that staff can be tired or having a difficult day, and if I hadn’t been rushing to an appointment, I probably would have been much more patient and simply assumed that he was having a difficult day. However, I was a heavily pregnant woman, very hungry, running late for an appointment, and I had clearly communicated this from the beginning. I am not making this complaint to cause problems for anyone. I simply believe the customer service could have been much better. I hope this feedback can be taken constructively and that the staff at this branch can be reminded about the importance of being helpful, respectful and attentive to customers. Please do better with your customer service.

Normally I'd give it a 5 star. However, I have found that on some days, it is never open at the time that it is supposed to be open at in the morning. Very disappointed about that.

Served by Ade… I asked for a sausage roll & immediately asked to change it to a pan au chocolate. She still put the sausage roll in a bag & also the pastry. When I politely said I didn’t want the sausage roll she immediately was rude moaning that I asked for it, it’s already in a bag and she has put it on the till to charge me! I had to ask her to remove rit from my bill & she clearly wasn’t happy. I did not touch the bag containing the sausage roll at all. Ade has bad attitude and the customer service of an alley cat!

The bakery is nice but the matcha I had here is absolutely disgusting. It is drenched in vanilla and syrup. Matcha should be off the menu!

What happens to your leftover food?

We’ve been donating unsold food for a long time. Originally our bakeries would team up with large charities who would help distribute it to smaller organisations. This process remains in place, though we’ve also worked hard to increase the amount of unsold food donated by our shops and we currently support a network of 1,077 local good causes. In 2022, we redistributed 1,800 tonnes of unsold food through our Outlet shops. A share of the profits from the outlets, totalling £450,000, was then donated back into the communities we serve. We’re no longer taking new applications for end-of-day food donation partners, but we continue to identify regions where our shops could support a local charitable collection.
