The Old Crown is located on the High Road in Leytonstone, East London. The nearest Tube is Leytonstone.
Built in 1888 as The Old Crown Inn, the pub has undergone several name changes, most recently The Birds in honour of Leytonstone’s most famous son, Sir Alfred Hitchcock. Following its closure in January 2026, it was refurbished and reopened a few weeks later as The Old Crown.
This is a traditionally decorated pub that has undergone an impressive makeover. The bar area is spacious, with the servery located at the back right. On the right-hand side is a pool table and a couple of dartboards. On the first floor is a huge function room, while at the rear is a good-sized beer garden.
The decor gives a proper traditional pub feel, with a mix of carpeted and boarded floors, leather banquettes, chairs and stools around sturdy tables, panelled and cream-coloured walls and several TVs. It was great to see the original tiling by the pool table retained, along with the stained leaded windows.
The beer selection features a who’s who of mainstream favourites and two cask ales. I opted for an Amstel; my pint was excellent, price point was amazing at under four quid! This is a wet-led pub, so no food is served, but bar snacks are available.
I arrived at 12pm on a sunny Saturday lunchtime in May. The pub had just opened, with two other punters in attendance. The atmosphere was calm, I settled in to watch the Champions League build-up. The service was superb; the team member on duty was welcoming and friendly. I was also kindly given a guided tour by the Guv’nor, who was equally friendly and told me about plans to develop the upstairs room.
The pub shows live sports on Sky and TNT, hosts karaoke, pool tournaments, and features DJs every weekend.
I really like what they’ve done with the place; this is definitely my kind of pub. The price point is affordable, the decor is proper pub, the hospitality was top drawer, and there’s plenty to keep you entertained. A very good visit indeed, and a must-visit if you’re in the area.
