Nice location and the barman was friendly and welcoming, which made for a good first impression. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing and the music was awful. I ordered the ham, egg and chips. The menu suggested ham hock, but what arrived was something they had tried to make look like a chop or cutlet. The eggs were overcooked, the watercress on the side was starting to turn brown, the portion of chips was quite small, and the pineapple was just half a slice with the tough core still left in it. The biggest concern was the ham itself. It didn't taste fresh, and I genuinely felt it was very close to being off, which completely spoiled the meal. The cider selection was also underwhelming. We have some of the best cider in the world, I'd expect a much better range of traditional ciders. Instead, the choice was mostly overly sweet, fruity ciders such as strawberry flavours, with very little in the way of proper classic cider. It's a shame because the pub was recommended. May be an off day

Came here for a roast with friends and the food was amazing. Loads of veg and beef and the Yorkshire pudding was perfect. Maisy our server was exceptional and attentive. We are coming back again.

Food was great and really good roast. Service, while friendly, was hit and miss. Had to ask for Service several times (on a booked table) and there were plenty of staff.

We booked Marquess Tavern for a Sunday roast on Father's Day and the experience unfortunately was an absolute disaster, marring our Father's Day experience. So many things went wrong across the food and service. For context, there were many staff and the restaurant was not busy at all. When we sat down and ordered right away, it took about 45 minutes for even basic starters like bread with butter and almonds to come out of the kitchen. We weren't served those on time despite having requested those to come out as soon as they were ready (because we had a toddler with us who we needed to manage). When the toast did arrive, it was burnt and cold, so was effectively inedible. We had ordered our mains and they did not come out until about an hour and a half later and only after multiple follow up requests. We had ordered cauliflower cheese and they took the order and then told us an hour and a half later, upon delivering the mains, that the cauliflower cheese would be out shortly. When we followed up to ask about it (because it never came), they told us that they were out of cauliflower cheese and offered us something else. If they were "out" perhaps they could have told us this at the very beginning when we had ordered it. Later, of course, we saw another table that had cauliflower cheese, which was mysterious, to say the least. Every request for refills of water, for ice, for drinks, for simple drinks like a Diet Coke, we had to request the item three or four times because they never came out in a timely way at all. For instance, it took 40 minutes to bring one of us a Coke. The food, when it did come out, was a mix of cold and hot. For instance the fish and chips where there fish was hot, the chips were cold. It may have been good food if it had been served properly and with decent service We had two of us order a beef roast. My mother-in-law requested horseradish to go with the roast. We were told it would be coming. It didn't come for about ten minutes. We went up to the bar to ask for it (because we needed to follow up on every single request, no matter how small). We were told they were out of horseradish, which is pretty unbelievable for a pub doing a Sunday roast. The staff were surly, rude, and lazy. One waitress even had over-the-ear headphones around her neck while she did her job, which doesn't seem appropriate in the least The manager came out to apologise to us for how long the food took, saying it was due to two trainee chefs in the kitchen. It seems absolutely irresponsible to have such a thin or poorly trained kitchen staff on Father's Day when it falls on a Sunday in a pub. That didn't make a lot of sense to us and it does not excuse the absolutely horrific service by the waitstaff there. We would like to enjoy this pub because it's a beautiful location and lovely exterior. And we live close by. Buy the service was absolutely outrageous. It was really embarrassing because my husband and I were hosting our brother and sister-in-law and parents in town for Father's Day to celebrate a really happy family meal. We would have liked them to enjoy seeing our neighborhood and celebrating family. And it was completely ruined by this pub and their service. One star. Please avoid - especially for special occasions.
