Worst Tesco I’ve visited. The layout is confusing, but the bigger issue is how customers are treated. Although the store is open until midnight, the exit to the car park is blocked from 10 pm. If you’ve done a large shopping, you’re forced to carry heavy bags all the way to your car because you can’t take a trolley through. I asked a member of staff for help and was told I could use the front exit with the trolley. That simply wasn’t true, as there’s a barrier preventing trolleys from leaving that way. No alternative or assistance was offered. Ironically, the homeless man outside the store was more helpful than any member of the staff.

There is a mystery lurking beneath the surface at this very well-sized Tesco on Ballard's lane, situated conveniently close to Finchley Central station and the residential areas on the winding roads and rolly ups and downs of Finchleian suburbia. The outside of the building is unremarkable—a concrete construction, perhaps from the 80s, from one of those eras when brick veneer ruled over intermittent fashions of smooth cladding. The complex is shared with flats on the top floors, and an establishment with a plastic molino for a sign, proudly announcing "temporary sign" in 12 point font to any bypassing planning enforcement officers. We enter the air conditioned enteriour unsuspecting; on occasion we are greeted by an unhoused gentleman soliciting change. The supermarket stretches out over a dozen aisles from household goods and clothes to the greengrocer's section in the back in all of its Zone 4 enormousness. Nothing invites complaint (that is: besides the one mystery which I shall get to in a moment! Bear with me, dear reader—) the shelves are well stocked and the staff is invariably lovely and helpful. The only signs of social strain and the deterioration of the urban public realm one hears so much about are the occasional shouts of security personnel halting a shoplifter and the elaborate barricades at the two ends of the wines and spirits aisle that are set up late at night. (A propos: this fine Tesco is both very large and open until midnight most days—a wonderfully convenient combination that is increasingly rare in merry post-covid England.) We get an excellent breadth of frozen goods and world foods, and an acceptable offering of fruit and vegetable. But! Let me now address the elephant in the room: the baked goods. In the country that gave birth both to political economy and the industrial revolution, why do we face a scarcity in bread and baguette worthy of war communism and a permanent state of emergency? Reason would dictate that in a fine market place such as this one prices would rise or supply expand such that the casual shopper can exchange his hard earned sterling for loaves of bread whenever he pleases; instead, rare are the times when one can do so. Are the good people of Finchley so ravenous for their pain quotidien that they buy up bread more quickly than it can be produced? Or are the learned ladies and gentlemen in Tesco's price setting department stubbornly choosing to ignore an opportunity for higher profit? Persistent shortages should not exist in a market economy. Something has to give. Either this bread is underpriced or the baker underpaid. In no other store which I visited throughout my polytropic wanderings have I encountered this issue. I have but the faintest hope that this minor plea, submitted to this questionable board of public comment is heard and the issue is managed. An otherwise fine shop. Four stars.

I would like to report an issue regarding age verification at this Tesco store. I regularly shop here, and on previous occasions, including yesterday, my digital ID on my phone was accepted without any problems. However, today the manager refused to accept it and insisted that I bring my physical passport. My passport is at home, which is about an hour away, so this is not a reasonable request. Carrying my passport everywhere also creates a real risk of it being lost or stolen. Several members of staff already know me because I shop here almost every day. They have seen my passport before and have previously accepted my digital ID without any issues. What is also frustrating is that it appears UK citizens are allowed to use digital identification, while I am not, despite presenting the same information. I would appreciate a clear explanation of the policy and for it to be applied consistently to everyone. I hope Tesco can review this matter and ensure staff follow a consistent and fair approach to age verification.
