There is something slightly ominous about this Tesco.
Nothing is specifically wrong. That is perhaps the problem.
The doors open normally. The lights are on. The shelves are stocked. The meal deal is present and appears to comply with all usual meal deal requirements. Staff are working. Customers are shopping.
And yet, from the moment you enter, there is a vague but persistent sense that something has happened here.
Or is about to.
It is difficult to identify the source.
Perhaps it is the lighting. Perhaps the unusual silence. Perhaps it is simply the particular geometry of the aisles. Whatever the cause, this Tesco has the atmosphere of a location you briefly visit near the beginning of a film and then, approximately 40 minutes later, realise was extremely important.
Everyone appears normal, but slightly too normal.
A man selects a yoghurt.
Why that yoghurt?
A member of staff pushes a cage through produce and disappears through a door marked STAFF ONLY.
I never see him again.
The self-checkouts are functioning, although one of them seems to be permanently displaying “Assistance is on the way.”
Is it?
I came in for fairly ordinary reasons. Milk. Something for dinner. Washing-up liquid.
I found all three.
This should have reassured me.
It did not.
At one point I became aware that I had been standing in the household aisle for considerably longer than necessary, staring at several varieties of sponge while experiencing the distinct sensation that I was being observed.
There was nobody there.
I selected the yellow and green ones.
They seemed safest.
The meal deal section was surprisingly well stocked, which only deepened my suspicions. It was late enough that there should have been consequences. Instead: chicken and bacon. BLT. Hoisin duck wrap. Multiple varieties of Innocent smoothie.
No gaps.
No desperation.
No lone egg and cress sandwich waiting for death.
Something was wrong.
I took a chicken triple.
At the checkout, everything proceeded without incident. No unexpected item in the bagging area. No age verification. No unexplained red light.
The machine simply accepted payment and thanked me.
I did not trust it.
I left the shop with everything I needed and turned around once I was safely outside.
The Tesco stood there.
Quiet.
Illuminated.
Watching.
I will return, obviously.
The meal deal selection is excellent.

Recommend Avoiding this Tesco (rude staff). There is a large Sainsburys at Holborn, large M&S on Tottenham court road, which have better customer service, more space and more choice.
