There is something almost reassuring about this Tesco Express. Not because it is calm, organised or particularly pleasant. It is none of those things.
At any given moment there appears to be some form of incident occurring. A delivery cage blocks an aisle. Someone is having a disagreement with the self-checkout. A member of staff is moving rapidly towards a problem that I neither understand nor wish to become involved in. The queue has developed its own internal politics.
And yet, fundamentally, Tesco delivers.
The meal deal is there.
Perhaps not every sandwich. Perhaps not the one you wanted. But a sandwich. A drink. A snack. £3.60 or whatever it costs now. The basic infrastructure of civilisation remains intact.
More importantly, this shop understands emergencies.
Not actual emergencies. I would strongly recommend a hospital for those.
Domestic emergencies.
It is 20:47. You have no washing-up liquid. There is one sponge left in your house and closer examination reveals that it should probably have been retired several governments ago.
Tesco Express is there.
You enter. There are twelve people trying to leave through the same door. A Deliveroo rider appears to have established permanent residency by the refrigerators. Something is beeping. Nobody knows why.
But there, against all odds, is Fairy Liquid.
And a sponge.
You take both.
You may also acquire a meal deal because the experience has taken something from you emotionally.
You leave six minutes later, slightly confused but with everything required to continue running a household.
Is it elegant? No.
Is it peaceful? Absolutely not.
Does it work?
Somehow, consistently, yes.
Four stars. One removed for the general atmosphere of a minor evacuation.
24 hr open
No way just lie
Try 4 to 5 time to get something at night waiting in hospital no want to let us in to get food
Tesco proudly claims "Every Little Helps", so I suppose closing entirely from 3am to 6am is their way of helping me save money. Security said 20 minutes, staff said 2 hours, congratulations on your "Core Values", the only thing open 24/7 here is the staff’s imagination for making up excuses!

The sign outside shouts 'Open 24 hours' in bold letters, but the reality is that at 4:00 AM you'll find the doors locked, with staff and a security guard looking at you from inside. If you close every night between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM for restocking, have the decency to turn off or cover the '24 hours' sign instead of misleading people walking around at night expecting an actual 24/7 store. Complete lack of transparency and professionalism.
