I never thought I’d leave a negative review for this Tesco Store, as it has always been excellent for my family and me over the years. The staff and atmosphere have usually been great, which makes today’s experience particularly disappointing.
After the gym, I bought a Diet Coke and water, paid as normal, and left the store. I later returned to buy more items. Upon re-entering, I noticed the security guard closely watching and following me around the store, which made me feel uncomfortable and unfairly judged.
As I was leaving after paying for my additional items, the security guard stopped me and accused me of not paying for the water and Diet Coke. I calmly explained that I had paid earlier and even showed my bank transaction, despite not being obligated to do so. He still did not believe me.
Not wanting to cause a scene or argue in public, I chose to report the situation to the manager instead. When I asked the security guard to identify himself and requested his badge number, he refused. I also chose not to publicly name or “put him on blast” online, out of respect for both my privacy and his, and for his safety.
Unfortunately, the manager’s response was patronising and dismissive. He repeatedly patted my shoulders while I was speaking, which made me uncomfortable and felt very demeaning. I remained calm throughout and simply wanted to be heard.
I also made it clear to the security guard that I am a very patient person and was willing to let this incident go, but that if I were to be treated this way again, I would have no choice but to file a formal complaint.
It is difficult not to question whether I was racially profiled as a Black male. This review is being posted for awareness. This experience left me feeling embarrassed, disrespected, and unfairly targeted, which is deeply upsetting given my long-standing positive relationship with this store.
