Extremely rude and unpleasant experience
I go into this Tesco almost every day, so I am familiar with the staff, and unfortunately, I had a very unpleasant experience yesterday while buying something.
I was 99% sure that I had paid for my item. I watched the confirmation appear on the self-checkout screen confirming that the payment had gone through, so I left the store. As I was walking across the street, two members of staff flagged me down and told me that I hadn’t paid for the item. I was genuinely confused because I was pretty sure I had paid, but I thought maybe I had somehow made a mistake.
I also found the whole situation extremely embarrassing, especially being stopped in front of other shoppers and made to feel as though I had stolen something when I had actually paid. I went back into the store and paid for the item again. Afterwards, I checked my bank account and saw that I had actually been charged twice, confirming that I had paid for it the first time.
I went back into the store, explained what had happened, and demanded a refund, which I did receive. What really disappointed me, however, was the complete lack of an apology. There was no acknowledgement that I had been wrongly accused of not paying, and instead, they simply blamed it on the machine. I understand that mistakes can happen, but when a customer is stopped and accused of leaving without paying, there should at least be some acknowledgement and an apology when it turns out that the customer was actually telling the truth.
I also felt uncomfortable because the security guard was standing and staring at me for the entire time I was purchasing my items. I understand that this is part of their job, but the way it was done felt very intrusive and uncomfortable.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only unpleasant experience I had at this Tesco that day. Earlier that morning, I was purchasing paracetamol, which is an age-restricted item. There was nobody near the checkouts or counters, so I waited for at least a minute for someone to approve the purchase. Eventually, I had to go and find a member of staff myself. The woman who came over was extremely unfriendly. She barely acknowledged me, made no eye contact, approved the item, and walked straight back to what she was doing without acknowledging me again. I said thank you, but received no response.
It creates a very unfriendly atmosphere when you visit this Tesco. I appreciate that staff have difficult jobs and that mistakes happen, but basic politeness, communication and customer service should still be expected. I regularly shop here and, unfortunately, while there are some friendly members of staff, far too many interactions have felt rude and unwelcoming.
This really needs to be addressed.
