This Tesco is definitely a Tesco.
I want to establish that immediately because, having visited it, I have spent an unreasonable amount of time reconsidering the matter.
It says Tesco outside.
The staff appear to work for Tesco.
My Clubcard worked.
I purchased a meal deal.
By every available legal and commercial measure, this is Tesco.
And yet it feels like a fake Tesco.
Not counterfeit exactly. More like somebody has been given 48 hours to construct a Tesco having previously visited one twice.
All of the constituent parts are there, but they’re not quite behaving correctly.
The signs are Tesco signs. The shelves are Tesco shelves. The little yellow Clubcard prices are scattered around reassuringly. But everything feels like it has been positioned by someone repeatedly consulting a document entitled What Does a Tesco Look Like?
There is a meal deal section.
Of course there is.
In fact, it feels particularly determined to demonstrate that there is a meal deal section.
“Look,” the shop seems to say. “Sandwiches. Crisps. Coca-Cola. This is obviously Tesco.”
Yes.
I know.
You don’t have to convince me.
And yet the harder it tries, the less convinced I become.
The bakery feels like a Tesco bakery recreated from memory. The fruit and vegetables are arranged correctly but somehow lack authority. Even the refrigerators seem to be humming in an unfamiliar accent.
I found myself examining a packet of Tesco Finest ham for reassurance.
Tesco Finest.
Tesco branding.
Tesco address on the back.
Fine.
But why am I checking?
At one point a member of staff walked past wearing a Tesco uniform and this somehow made matters worse. It felt like an unnecessarily obvious detail.
“Yes, of course our employees wear Tesco uniforms. Because this is Tesco.”
Nobody asked.
I continued towards household goods.
Washing-up liquid: present.
Sponges: present.
Kitchen roll: present.
Everything required to substantiate the claim that this is a functioning branch of Tesco had been carefully assembled.
I selected a sponge.
I don’t know why, but it felt important to complete a normal Tesco transaction and leave.
At the self-checkout, things became almost theatrical.
“Scan your Clubcard.”
Oh, you’d like to see my Clubcard, would you?
Interesting.
I scanned it.
The prices reduced.
A compelling performance.
I paid.
My bank subsequently confirmed that the payment had, indeed, gone to Tesco.
This should be definitive.
It isn’t.
I left with a Tesco carrier bag containing a Tesco meal deal and Tesco household products, having paid Tesco using a Tesco Clubcard inside a building with Tesco written on it.
And I still turned around outside to check the sign.
Tesco.
Apparently.
I cannot explain the feeling any better than this: it is a completely legitimate Tesco doing an extremely convincing impression of a fake Tesco attempting to convince you that it is a real Tesco.
Which it is.
Probably.
5/5 for groceries.
2/5 for existential certainty.

It's a small Tesco Express, handy if you're passing by. Limited range, quite often crowded - it's small.

The worst layout I've experienced in a Tesco Express
