Greggs is a British food to go brand, specialising in fresh bakes, sandwiches, hot drinks and sweet treats. Founded in 1939, Greggs started out selling eggs and yeast by pushbike, ten years later the first shop opened on Gosforth High Street, in Newcastle. Now, over 80 years later Greggs is a household name thanks to their tasty Sausage Rolls, Steak Bakes, Chicken Bakes, Doughnuts, Yum Yums and freshly ground Fairtrade Coffee. I use this place a few times a week and the staff are lovely. I was in there yesterday Thursday afternoon. And witnessed the staff getting abuse. It was a very hot day. A customer was abusing staff, a guy named Paul for no reason. He dealt with it calmly and I did wonder how on earth these workers can keep calm with such rude obnoxious customers who demand and r hurling abuse at them. All the staff are very welcoming and nice at this store.

My children are ill after this food. I took food only for them and didn't eat myself. Now I don't sleep at half past 2 and wait what will be next? Hospital?

After going everyday for a month, I had one of the most humiliating customer experiences of my life at this Greggs branch, and honestly it completely changed my view of Greggs as a company.
While quietly looking for breakfast, a staff member suddenly grabbed food out of my hands from behind and aggressively ordered me to leave the shop without explanation. I had done absolutely nothing disruptive or threatening and was completely shocked by the level of hostility.
The situation escalated publicly in front of other customers, which was deeply humiliating. Another manager then sided with the employee based on a false accusation that I had been filming inside the shop, which was untrue.
What disturbed me most was not only the aggression itself, but how quickly I was treated as if I had done something criminal despite there being no explanation, no attempt at communication, and no justification given at the time.
I reported the incident formally. Greggs later confirmed in writing that the matter required escalation to senior management and a full internal investigation. However, beyond repeated apologies, no meaningful accountability or transparency was provided. For a company as large as Greggs, the way this was handled was disgraceful. They seemed far more interested in protecting staff and avoiding responsibility than properly addressing what happened to a loyal paying customer.
The experience genuinely affected me afterwards. I avoided returning to Greggs entirely and felt anxious even entering similar shops. No customer should ever be treated this way. What is most disappointing is that Greggs presents itself as a friendly, welcoming brand, yet my experience showed the complete opposite.
This branch seriously needs better staff training, de-escalation procedures, and management oversight.

What happens to your leftover food?
We’ve been donating unsold food for a long time. Originally our bakeries would team up with large charities who would help distribute it to smaller organisations.
This process remains in place, though we’ve also worked hard to increase the amount of unsold food donated by our shops and we currently support a network of 1,077 local good causes.
In 2022, we redistributed 1,800 tonnes of unsold food through our Outlet shops. A share of the profits from the outlets, totalling £450,000, was then donated back into the communities we serve.
We’re no longer taking new applications for end-of-day food donation partners, but we continue to identify regions where our shops could support a local charitable collection. To find out more or nominate an organisation visit: https://www.greggsfoundation.org.uk/unsold-food-donations.
Why do you have different prices regionally?
It is very common for retailers to have regional prices. This is because the costs of running a business can vary across different parts of the country and in certain locations, for example rent costs. We always keep our prices as low as possible for our customers.
