  Very nice food and great service. Real hidden gem. We eat out a lot and I personally almost never give a review but this place has done everything spot on including decor and attentive, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Well done to everyone who works here!

  Only called in for a drink but delighted to find the pub very busy with loads of people eating, and a great atmosphere plus wonderful service. I am posting this to congratulate the royal on being, as far as I as I know, the only pub in the carnforth area to put a zero percent alcohol beer on draught - and an excellent one at that. Loads of people don't drink alcohol and the usual offering of poor quality bottles of zero percent beer from the fridge is not acceptable anymore. I will certainly be returning to the Royal, and once again, well done for putting your customers first. Many thanks

  I’m genuinely disappointed with this visit. We’ve been here previously and had a really good experience, but unfortunately the restaurant has seriously gone downhill. The service was incredibly slow from the start. Our drinks took an unnecessarily long time to arrive, and when we questioned the delay, we were told that the bar staff have to make drinks for the restaurant tables while also serving customers waiting at the bar. Quite frankly, that is how every restaurant and pub works. Bar staff are expected to serve both the people at the bar and the tables, so this felt more like an excuse than an explanation. If the bar cannot cope with both, then the obvious solution is that more staff are needed. What makes it worse is that this wasn’t even prime time on a Saturday evening. The biggest disappointment, however, was the cheese and onion pie. For £19, I expected something substantial and well presented. Instead, we received a roughly 6-inch pot containing about an inch of filling, with a puff pastry lid simply stuck on top. Calling it a pie feels generous. For £19, the portion and quality were frankly diabolical and nowhere near what I would expect from a restaurant charging that much for a main course. The mash served alongside it was just as disappointing. It was bland, completely lacking in flavour and tasted like microwave mash. For a £19 main course, I expect the sides to be made and prepared to a much higher standard. By the end of the meal, we simply couldn’t wait to pay and leave. There was no enjoyment to the experience, which is particularly disappointing given how good our previous visit had been. It’s a real shame because we previously rated this place highly. Unfortunately, based on this visit, the standards have clearly slipped dramatically. If the restaurant wants to charge these prices, the service, staffing, portions and quality of the food need to reflect them. We certainly won’t be rushing back.
