Papa Johns: now with added cheese tax.
Papa Johns definitely isn’t what it used to be, apart from the pizzas apparently now believing they’re a luxury product.
Tried ordering at around 9:30pm last night and the iOS app informed us the restaurant was no longer taking orders. Fair enough, perhaps everyone had gone home. Except, rather mysteriously, the desktop website was still happily taking orders. So either the kitchen closes earlier for iPhone users or we accidentally discovered the VIP entrance.
Nearly £50 later, TWO pizzas were on their way. To be fair, delivery was quick and the food arrived hot, so full credit where it’s due.
Unfortunately, we’d also paid an extra £4 PER PIZZA for stuffed crust.
“Stuffed” is perhaps doing some fairly heroic work there.
Unless they’ve recently launched a new Air-Filled Crust™, there was remarkably little evidence of the cheese we’d paid £8 extra for. Maybe there’s a late-night cheese tax? Perhaps our mozzarella allowance had already been distributed to customers ordering before 9pm?
The pizzas themselves were fine. And that’s probably the problem: at nearly £50, “fine” starts to feel like you’ve been mugged by a pepperoni.
For roughly the same money we could have gone to Hickory’s and had an actual family meal, with plates, cutlery, table service and probably enough cheese to visually confirm its existence.
Papa Johns used to be an easy choice for a decent takeaway. At these prices, for this quality, it’s becoming an increasingly easy choice not to bother.
UPDATE / CORRECTION in the interests of journalistic integrity 😂
Following my previous Papa John’s review, I do need to correct one factual inaccuracy.
I stated that we’d paid £4 for the Stuffed Air Crust™. This was incorrect.
It was, in fact, £2.99.
Papa John’s subsequently got in touch, asked me to fill in a form, and have now refunded £5.98, essentially returning the cheese tax for the two pizzas.
So, credit where it’s due: the cheese tax has been successfully reclaimed. 🫡🧀
Unfortunately, that appears to be where the compensation ends.
Nothing for the disappointing food. Nothing for the overall experience. Just £5.98 returned for the privilege of ordering a stuffed crust and receiving something apparently stuffed largely with hopes, dreams and structural air.
I wasn’t expecting or asking for a full refund. A small gesture acknowledging that the whole thing was a bit rubbish would probably have been enough to make me think, fair play, they’ve tried to put it right.
Instead, my takeaway from the whole experience is probably just to spend the money somewhere else next time.
Still, I suppose I can’t complain about not being compensated for the disappointment.
They just don't care.
Apparently disappointment comes free with every Papa John’s order. 😂
