To start on a positive, our server Joanna was lovely. She was friendly, polite and made us feel welcome throughout. She’s a credit to the restaurant and I hope she continues exactly how she is.
Unfortunately, the rest of our experience was very disappointing.
Earlier in the evening I had booked a table in person for 8:45pm. Regrettably, we couldn’t make that time. I tried phoning the restaurant twice to change the booking to 9:15pm but couldn’t get an answer, so instead we made a new booking under my partner’s name and arrived exactly at 9:15.
As soon as we walked in, the gentleman who I’m assuming was the manager looked up at us, checked the time on his phone and almost chuckled to himself. When I gave my partner’s name for the booking, he immediately responded in quite a confrontational tone saying that we had a booking at 8:45. It completely caught both me and my partner off guard and made things awkward from the moment we arrived.
I apologised and explained that I’d simply got the timing wrong and knew it was late. We were then told the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes. I replied that we’d choose straight away, which we did. From that point onwards, the gent cracked on with his closing tasks and fortunately didn’t interact with us again. However, It just wasn’t a comfortable environment for me and my partner. It felt like he still just wanted us out as quickly as possible. I’d originally planned on ordering dessert as well, but after the way we were made to feel, I honestly just wanted to leave.
I work in hospitality myself, so I completely understand that late tables can be frustrating. However, I still make an effort to give every customer the same level of service regardless of what time they arrive. We didn’t receive that here.
As for the food, my partner enjoyed her pasta and garlic bread. Unfortunately, my pizza was a real let down.
I ordered a Margherita with ham. I watched the pizza being made without the ham before Joanna reminded the kitchen that it needed adding. One of the chefs seemed to huff, told another chef to do it, and a couple of strips of ham were thrown on before the pizza went back into the oven for what couldn’t have been more than a couple of minutes. When it arrived at the table, the ham on top wasn’t even warm to the touch.
On top of that, I genuinely struggled to cut the pizza. For just under £17, I’d honestly have preferred a pizza from my local takeaway for half the price, or even Domino’s. There just wasn’t anything that stood out as authentic or worth the price.
After eating barely a quarter of my pizza, we decided to call it a night. Joanna brought the bill over promptly and remained friendly until we left. She also pointed me in the right direction when I asked where the toilets were, which were clean but not particularly easy to find.
As we left, Joanna wished us well. The gentleman who had greeted us earlier was outside talking to one of the chefs and quickly went back inside when he saw us. We left feeling hungry and ended up getting food and dessert elsewhere around the corner.
The cocktail my partner had was also fine as well as my drink.
At just over £55 this was just one big expensive mistake and sadly ,after this experience, I couldn’t recommend it to anyone unless there are some serious improvements. The service from Joanna was the only real positive from an otherwise disappointing visit.
