Side salad with a little extra protein 🪰🥗 🤢
Thought this was reasonably priced food. It only had 3.7 stars, but there aren’t many places to eat in Caernarfon on a Monday evening, so we thought we’d give it a try. Staff on the till and clearing tables were polite and helpful, so credit where it’s due.
My daughter’s lasagne came with garlic bread and a side salad. Unfortunately the salad looked like it had either been sat out too long or shoved under a heat lamp. The lettuce had loads of black bits through it and even a small fly on it (see photos).
My daughter had already eaten the lasagne by then, so I simply mentioned it to a staff member and said: “Can you clear the plates and have a look at the salad please, it clearly hasn’t been washed properly.”
To be fair, the staff member offered a dessert or replacement meal, but I explained I wasn’t looking for compensation, I just wanted the chef made aware because basic food hygiene matters.
As we were leaving, a group of staff were by the bar, the staff member who cleared the plates said bye and apologies again. I said thanks and asked whether the chef had been told. The staff member said they were just discussing with the chef there and then. Unfortunately, instead of acknowledging the issue professionally, the chef decided to pull faces as we walked away.
That attitude honestly says more than the dirty salad did. Customers raising hygiene concerns politely should not be made to feel awkward or mocked for it. A simple “sorry, we’ll sort it” would have gone a lot further than the immature reaction we got instead.
Nobody expects perfection, but if you work in a kitchen, washing salad properly is not difficult and taking feedback professionally really is the bare minimum.
