I have shopped at Tesco Extra Cirencester for years, but after two recent experiences, I have to question whether customer service is now considered optional.
My first experience was at the pharmacy collecting a prescription. While waiting in line, the lady in front of me was looking at her phone. It quickly became apparent that she was wearing a hearing aid. The pharmacy employee asked for her address, received no response, and instead of politely repeating the question or facing the customer and asking whether the customer had heard her, loudly shouted, "HELLO!"
The customer immediately apologised and provided her address. I was genuinely shocked by how rude and insensitive the interaction was. I commented that it was unprofessional and walked away in disgust. No customer, particularly one with a hearing impairment, should be spoken to like that.
Fast forward to this morning.
I had already been shopping elsewhere and successfully used my debit card with PIN. I then stopped at Tesco to fill up with diesel. The first pump declined my card. The second pump did exactly the same. Knowing there was more than enough money in the account, I selected "Pay at Kiosk," filled up, and went inside.
The cashier informed me the card had been declined and, in front of a queue of waiting customers, proceeded to tell me that either "you've got no money in your account" or "your chip is damaged."
What an astonishing conclusion to jump to.
No attempt to suggest there might be a pump issue. No suggestion that Tesco's systems occasionally experience problems. No discretion. Just a public assumption that the customer may not have any money.
The punchline? I left Tesco, went straight to Aldi, bought fruit, inserted exactly the same card, entered exactly the same PIN, and the transaction completed perfectly.
So apparently my card wasn't damaged and my bank account wasn't empty after all.
The common theme across both visits was not a technical issue. It was attitude.
Good customer service costs nothing. Basic courtesy costs nothing. Treating customers with dignity costs nothing. Yet somehow Tesco Extra Cirencester seems determined to run a deficit in all three.
The store itself may be fine, but based on these experiences, some staff could benefit from remembering that customers are people, not inconveniences. Without customers the staff have no jobs.
Disappointing, unprofessional, and completely lacking in customer awareness.

A very big thank you to Clare on Customer Service. I had problem with a purchase. Instead of sending the hares racing and averting unnecessary drama, Clare resolved the issue in a matter a minutes. Refreshing to have a common sense approach. Thank you Clare.

You need to sort out the Click and Collect. The staff are always friendly. The issue is the ridiculous layout meaning two cars never fit which causes queues as often only one car at a time is served. Also, why have you got people bending to the ground to pick up their shopping and pack it? Surely this is a breach of accessibility laws? Just put a long table somewhere - anything. Right now it’s just a one car car-port at an awkward location, with people bending to pick up their pint of milk off the floor. I will admit you can technically get two cars packing if one poor sod doesn’t mind standing in the pouring rain. But as this is Britain - rain seems unlikely….
As said though, the staff are always great there.
