Founded in 1939, Greggs started out selling eggs and yeast by pushbike, ten years later the first shop opened on Gosforth High Street, in Newcastle. - DKDaniel KennedySep 26, 20262.0I have been a customer here for a long time, and 99% of the staff over the years have been pleasant and professional. Nothing, therefore, could have prepared me for the encounter I had today with a newer, bespectacled male staff member. It was mid-afternoon—nowhere near closing time—so I reasonably assumed the store would have basic stock, including something as standard as a Margherita pizza slice. I was perfectly happy to wait or return 10 minutes later, and the staff member initially agreed to put one in the oven for me. However, things went downhill when I asked for two Halloween-themed doughnuts displayed directly behind a shelf label marked "Yum Yums." When I ordered based on the label in front of the item, he condescendingly told me, "You must know what a yum yum is." Apparently, it is the customer's fault for trusting the store's shelf labels rather than knowing the exact promotional name of a seasonal doughnut. Rather than simply acknowledging the mislabelled tray, he became dismissive and hostile. To make matters worse, immediately after this exchange, he suddenly claimed they lacked the ingredients to make the pizza slice he had just agreed to bake. The store was quiet, the timing was convenient, and his sudden change of story came across as petty retaliation over a simple labeling misunderstanding. I ended up ordering something else, but the rest of the transaction was incredibly uncomfortable. It was blatantly clear he was trying to goad me into a reaction before I left the store, but I clocked exactly what he was doing and refused to stoop to his level. An unprovoked, unprofessional attitude that lets down an otherwise great local branch.

We’ve been donating unsold food for a long time. Originally our bakeries would team up with large charities who would help distribute it to smaller organisations.
This process remains in place, though we’ve also worked hard to increase the amount of unsold food donated by our shops and we currently support a network of 1,077 local good causes.
In 2022, we redistributed 1,800 tonnes of unsold food through our Outlet shops. A share of the profits from the outlets, totalling £450,000, was then donated back into the communities we serve.
