Subway on Magdalen Street is my go to because it’s the only halal Subway in Norwich. The food is fresh, the service is quick, and it’s great having a halal option for subs in the city. Always a reliable stop when I’m nearby.

It was a cold day and my girlfriend and I thought we’d pop into Subway. Nothing fancy. Just a quick stop. I wanted a cappuccino, she wanted a Gatorade. Simple mission. Two items. Easy win.
Well… apparently not.
First discovery. No Gatorade. Only Powerade. Now look, that alone isn’t the end of the world. I’m not here to start a sports drink war. Things go out of stock. Fine.
But then the coffee situation began.
On the menu it clearly lists cappuccinos in medium and large. Being someone who takes coffee very seriously (possibly too seriously according to my girlfriend) I politely ask for a large cappuccino at the counter.
I’m told they only do one size. Medium.
Right. Slightly confusing but okay. Maybe the menu just hasn’t caught up with reality yet. Happens.
While ordering I also ask if they have caramel syrup for the hot drinks. Again, not a huge deal, but the answer is basically no. So the coffee options are starting to look less like a menu and more like a suggestion.
Anyway I receive my cappuccino… which is clearly a medium. Which would be fine… except I then notice I’ve been charged for a large.
Now I’m a massive coffee drinker. Like the kind of person who notices the tiny things. And one of the most basic cappuccino details on planet earth is the little dusting of chocolate on top. It’s practically tradition. I ask if they do that.
“No, we don’t do that.”
Fair enough, but at this point the cappuccino is slowly losing every single thing that makes it a cappuccino.
Then comes the taste test.
Burnt.
Absolutely roasted into oblivion. The beans tasted like they’d been through a small house fire. The roast was way too hot and it completely killed the flavour. I took two sips and just stared at the cup like it had personally betrayed me.
On top of that the lady serving us was blunt the entire time. No smile, no welcome, just very cold energy. Ordering felt less like buying a drink and more like I’d interrupted something very important.
By the end of it I was just thinking about the independent coffee shop literally down the road that I should have gone to in the first place.
Cold day. No Gatorade. One mystery coffee size. Charged for the wrong one. No chocolate dusting. Burnt beans.
Honestly I should have just made a cup of tea at home.
Do not recommend. ☕️
