  As far as convenience stores goes this is the least convenient. At the heart of a lovely community this store lets down its locals regularly. Times on the shop state open 8-2100. However these days it’s rather hit and miss and frequently closed at the drop of a hat. When it is open, it’s again pot luck as to whether you’ll actually get what you need with empty shelves and often the items they do have in is overpriced. Staff whilst friendly on the whole aren’t the most helpful, and don’t rush to serve you and I’ve waited up to ten minutes for someone to actually serve me. There is also a post office but again this is not very reliable and the opening times definitely differ to that in the website.. this needs to improve ASAP

  For starters how can a convenience store have empty shelves. When the shelves are used as intended, ie stocked with Products and produce, IT IS SHUT ( MORTONHAMSTEAD COOP HAS IT'S REGULAR OPENING TIMES AND CLOSING AND SUCCESSFULLY MANAGES THIS WITH FULL SHELVES, WELL DONE MORTON COOP) Now back to our excuse for a so called convenience store , NOW Closed. Its know by the Residents Of the town Chagford as the Sparse. So many people relying on the one shop in chagford who Can't Drive make the journey on foot from home only to find a shop selling SHELVES ( nothing on them) or closed most evenings ( opening 08.00 hrs Closeing 21.00 hrs) shutting 17.00hrs There's got to be an answer . MY ANSWER IS GET THE COOP IN . People of CHAGFORD like and Deserve Continuity, Not happening at Sparse

  A complete breakdown in management that prioritises profit over the local community. For years, this Spar has been run more like an overpriced petrol station forecourt than a vital village store that local residents rely on year-round. While tourists get high-margin luxury items in the summer, locals are routinely left with empty shelves during long weekends and throughout the quiet winter months when essential items like milk, bread, and basic staples are nowhere to be found. Over the last few months, the wheels have completely come off: Incomprehensible Operational Decisions: Closing the shop in the middle of the day just to put stock on shelves is absolute madness for a convenience store. Deliveries and restocking should be managed early in the morning or out of hours—not by locking out paying customers in broad daylight. Unreliable Opening Hours & Post Office Closures: Both the store and the Post Office operate on unpredictable schedules. Local businesses are left unable to send customer orders because no one on shift is "Post Office trained" or because basic supplies like Amazon return stickers were simply never ordered. Impact on the Community: An excuse culture has taken root among the staff. While shortages or understaffing are frustrating for employees, they do not make terrible service acceptable. It is heartbreaking to see elderly residents walk to the shop expecting to buy dinner, only to find the doors locked or the essentials missing. Where is the management in all of this? Managing deliveries, staffing schedules, and stock flow is the bare minimum required to run a shop. Local residents are often quick to defend the staff because they are "trying their best," but trying hard doesn't replace basic competence and customer care. Chagford desperately deserves a convenience shop that actually puts its community FIRST. (To anyone reading: ignore the 5-star reviews from tourists who dropped in once on a sunny afternoon—talk to the locals who rely on this place day in, day out).
