A very disappointing change of policy towards gluten-free customers I have been a regular customer of Domino’s Clay Cross since the store opened. Over the years that has meant pizzas for myself, regular orders for my family, gatherings with friends and, occasionally, “Pizza Friday” orders for 20–30 people at my company. I have no idea what the cumulative spend has been, but it will certainly run into many thousands of pounds. I have also nearly always collected my orders, with the collection discount being an important part of why I continued choosing Domino’s. For more than three years I have needed to eat gluten-free. Domino’s GF base is, frankly, not my favourite pizza base in the world, but I have continued buying it because it allows me to join in when family, friends or colleagues are having Domino’s. Tonight I ordered and collected my gluten-free pizza — and discovered that it no longer qualified for the discount. I therefore paid full price. When I questioned this, I was told that vegan pizzas are treated the same way. That comparison actually made the policy more troubling to me, not less. Choosing a vegan diet can be a personal or ethical choice. Coeliac disease, medically significant gluten intolerance/sensitivity and wheat allergy are not lifestyle choices. For some customers, avoiding particular ingredients is a medical necessity. So I would genuinely like Domino’s to explain the rationale for this policy. Why should a customer who cannot safely eat the standard product be required to pay substantially more simply to participate in the same meal as everyone else? And has Domino’s considered whether excluding medically necessary dietary alternatives from mainstream promotions could disadvantage customers whose underlying medical conditions may qualify for protection under the Equality Act 2010? I am not claiming here that the policy is unlawful. I am asking whether Domino’s has actually considered that question. After years of loyalty and what must by now be many thousands of pounds of personal, family, social and business orders, tonight left me feeling that customers with medically restricted diets are effectively being financially penalised for something they did not choose. The staff member was polite and was simply explaining the policy as they understood it, so this review is not a criticism of the Clay Cross staff. It is a criticism of the policy. Domino’s: I think you need to reconsider this one. Edit: Looking at the last few customer reviews (a quick scan, much repetition, appearing on the same day - as of today noted as “4 days ago”) - same customer names - different sign-in names for same customer name - same day - same review stats (5, 5, 5), exactly - no comments, no words, nothing at all, just 5-5-5 (no room improvement?) I also wonder if an audit of reviewers, and review practices, is in order?
