EDIT: advice for the persons replying to reviews, when using AI to reply to people you’ve tried to rip off, delete “[your name]” from the response and it won’t be as obvious.
Came for lunch. I ordered and paid for the ham hock (£17.25). Immediately told that this was out of stock, I replaced with the peri-peri chicken burger (£15.50) and was not offered the difference refunded.
This is not however my primary complaint.
When the ‘peri-peri burger’ arrived it contained the smallest/thinnest slice of chicken I’ve ever been served. You couldn’t even call it a sandwich, let alone a ‘burger’.
When asked how our meal was, the front of house staff replied ‘I know, it was tiny’.
After making a point at the bar, this one dish was refunded. We live around the corner and eat out regularly in the valley. We’re insulted that the chef thought it acceptable to attempt to rip us off in such a way, we won’t be back.

The location is excellent — right in the heart of one of the most magical towns, so for location alone I would give 5 stars.
Unfortunately, our overall experience did not live up to our expectations.
We came for food and had roast beef, lasagne and a children’s burger. The roast beef was enjoyable, although I would have preferred mashed potatoes; however, this was clearly stated on the menu, so I cannot complain about that. The lasagne, at nearly £20, was quite average and I honestly believe it could have been better. The children’s burger was also okay, but I felt the quality of the meat could be improved. There was a good selection of drinks, which was a positive.
The biggest disappointment, however, was the cleanliness and service.
Our table was sticky, and the cutlery looked dirty — I have included photos. I actually had to ask for clean cutlery, and a member of staff had to take it away and wash it because much of the cutlery in the box appeared sticky or dirty. The menu was also sticky and did not look clean.
Service was very basic. We ordered at the bar and the staff member was polite, but nobody came to our table after the food was served to ask whether everything was okay. At one point, a waiter came over, put some napkins into the cutlery box without saying anything to us, and walked away. I found this rather strange, especially considering the condition of the cutlery.
I know this pub has many good reviews, and I am genuinely pleased that other customers have had a better experience. Perhaps our experience would have been different if we had been seated at another table, received a clean menu and had clean cutlery from the beginning.
But my question is: should a customer really have to check whether the table, menu and cutlery are clean before starting their meal? In my opinion, no.
I am not someone who gives up easily, so I stayed and enjoyed what I could. But cleanliness, presentation and basic attention to customers are important, especially when there is so much competition nearby.
I hope the owner takes this review constructively and speaks with the younger staff about paying more attention to the small things — clean tables, clean menus, clean cutlery and checking on customers after serving food.
This is an honest review based on our experience. I really wanted to be able to give 5 stars, but unfortunately I cannot.

We called in during the day, midweek on a family holiday to book a table for an evening meal as we were struggling with the online booking on the website. The bar staff were super friendly and reserved a table for seven of us - no problem.
Returning later the welcome was just as good.
There were two well-kept real ales on the bar.
The menu has plenty of choice for everyone and is a step up from the usual pub-fayre. The food arrived really quickly and everyone was delighted with the quality and presentation.
Service from the waitress was excellent and with some multi-buy and ‘pie night’ deals we thought the food was excellent value for such quality.
We were so impressed we returned on the last night of our holiday and once again had a great evening.
Tip for the managers - sort out the online booking as twice we looked and ‘no availability’ was showing but after booking in person and on the phone there were tables still free until the end of food service.

Disappointed from the moment we entered. August 2026
When we entered, my family and I were shocked at the lack of service and rudeness received from staff members. There was no acknowledgment of our presence, pointed at our table and not informed of where menus and where to order. To add to an already painful experience, our table was filthy sticky and not clean.
After booking a table for my family and expressing we had a push chair and would appreciate a table with some room to accommodate this, we was put in the smallest table with minimal space where the pushchair was therefore blocking the walk way for others passing. The “restaurant” was right by the bar area meaning people was crowding our table and leaving a disgusting smell of smoke from those who had been outside. Very unpleasant when you’re trying to decide on what to eat and especially with young children.
My partner and our son went into the men’s toilet to be greeted by an uncleaned smelling bathroom filled with suspicious wet sticky patches on the floor and a smell that simply overpowered all other senses. Disgusting.
We decided to continue to browse the menu after reading good reviews and ordered some drinks and our shocks was flat where the soda had ran out leaving a non fizzy coke. Giving the benefit of the doubt this was a one off we decided to inform staff at the bar however noticed how busy it had become and bar staff were continuously returning to and from the cellar rather than making one large trio often leaving the bar unattended and customers annoyed. At this point we decided to leave…
Would only return if there was no other place to rehydrate after months of starvation in a zombie apocalypse..
