  So I’ve never experienced such bizarre and shocking service in all of my 55 years. I was in the spar last Friday with my husband (58) and 19-year-old daughter. We were buying four beers, and three bottles of cider. My daughter helped to carry the ciders, and place them on the counter as I put down the beers, and got my phone ready to pay. The cashier asked my daughter if she had any ID, to which I said I am buying them not her, but she refused to serve us unless my daughter could produce ID as she had “touched them”. We left the shop in disbelief, and went across the road to get some pasties. Another customer followed us out, and offered to buy what we wanted, saying how ridiculous the shop staff were. He said there were lots of complaints about the behaviour online, but because they have a monopoly within Polzeath they get away with it. My daughter said she would go back to our Campsite to get her ID but I said that seemed silly, and I would just go back in the shop alone. I walked back in, went to the fridge, picked up the beers and cider and joined the queue to pay. A different woman served me, but as she did the first cashier shook her head, and said I couldn’t buy them. I asked why but was told it was the law. I have never known anything so crazy and have never been refused to purchase anything in my life. I totally understand the issue with selling alcohol to under 18s but this was clearly not the case in this instance, and yet common sense could not be applied. Truly dreadful customer service, And if you ask me a little power crazy!

  Read all the bad reviews but where else was I going to go. To be fair, the staff led by who I assume was the manager were all very cheery and friendly. Yes prices are high but tbh I don’t blame them - they understand supply/demand. Variety of products was good and service despite being busy was quick. If you’re visiting Polzeath don’t complain about prices.

  Summer 2026, I found it absolutely fine. A little bit pricey, just like one of those metro stores in cities. But a good selection of food even late on a Sunday afternoon when most places are closed. Unfortunately no fresh bread that late but a huge selection of normal bread. Bit of a queue to pay, about 3 or 4 minutes. Staff seemed busy, but great.

  If I could leave 0 stars I would. Visited the shop today at about 12:30 with two friends to purchase a few beers before a trip to the beach, numerous groups of young people were served alcohol in front of us without being ID’d - all were white. When we got to the till all 3 of us who are over the age of 35 were refused service unless we all had ID, the only difference between us and the group in front of us was that my 2 friends aren’t white.

  Staff are relatively friendly although everything is massively overpriced.The bakery food tastes pretty good although half the pastries seem to be out of stock after 8 o’clock on a summer morning.Also, it should definitely be open later than 7:30pm.
