- IBIan BuckleJun 10, 20265.0Not being locals, we'd researched places for lunch in Penrith and when we got there we came across one of them, The Board & Elbow. Being able to view the menu displayed outside encouraged us to venture in. The young woman behind the bar welcomed us and remained cheerful with everyone as she carried out a multitude of tasks, which included not only taking orders but also serving meals. The three of us chose different meals from the lunchtime 'meal + drink' menu (@ £10.49) plus sweets and felt that this represented excellent value for money (especially as the hospitality industry is struggling to cover escalating costs). It is evident that our positive experience has not been shared by everyone but we can only report our findings and praise the friendliness and efficiency of the member of staff who looked after us. The food was of the standard expected and we would certainly go there again.

Several dishes tasted as though they had been reheated rather than freshly prepared, the roast potatoes were rock hard, and overall the food lacked the finesse and attention to detail we were expecting. One thing worth noting for families is that there doesn't appear to be a separate restaurant dining area. We were seated in the main pub area, so dining was mixed in with people who were drinking at the bar. This may not be an issue for everyone, but it wasn't quite the dining atmosphere we were expecting. That said, the staff were lovely throughout our visit and were particularly good with our young child, which we really appreciated. The service was warm and welcoming, making us feel comfortable as a family. It's a shame because the venue itself has plenty of potential, but sadly the food was the biggest let-down of our visit.

No mushy peas on the plate, battered sausage was cheap sausage not Cumberland, no slice of lemon which is usually standard with pub fish n chips, poor to say the least, frozen chips bargain basement ones, crispy batter on the fish and quite tasty, tartar sauce side, very poor really and the price was horrendous at over £18. Never again.
