Greggs is a British food to go brand, specialising in fresh bakes, sandwiches, hot drinks and sweet treats. Founded in 1939, Greggs started out selling eggs and yeast by pushbike, ten years later the first shop opened on Gosforth High Street, in Newcastle. Now, over 80 years later Greggs is a household name thanks to their tasty Sausage Rolls, Steak Bakes, Chicken Bakes, Doughnuts, Yum Yums and freshly ground Fairtrade Coffee. Very disappointing experience at this Greggs, mainly because of the way the pricing issue was handled and the complete lack of a clear explanation from the staff member serving me.
I ordered two slices of pizza, including the Buffalo Chicken option. The display clearly showed a price of £5.75 for two slices, yet when I was charged, the total came to £6.20.
When I questioned why I had been charged more than the advertised price, the explanation I was given was that I “didn’t ask for a box.” This made absolutely no sense. If the display advertises two slices at £5.75, that is reasonably the price a customer expects to pay. To make the explanation even more confusing, the pizza ended up being served to me in a box anyway, yet I was still charged £6.20.
This review isn’t about complaining over 45p. The amount itself is not the point. The issue is the principle of displaying one price and then charging customers another price without being able to provide a reasonable explanation for the difference. If something like this happens repeatedly across a large number of transactions, even small discrepancies can add up across many customers. Customers should be able to trust that the price displayed is the price they will actually be charged.
What made the situation more frustrating was that when I tried to understand why the price was different, I couldn’t get a proper explanation. Instead, I was given the excuse about not requesting a box, which still does not explain why the advertised price was not applied.
On top of that, I was initially told the food would be ready in around 10 minutes. I waited, and it ended up taking more than 15 minutes. A few extra minutes by itself would normally not be a major issue, but combined with the incorrect pricing and the confusing explanation, the whole experience felt poorly handled.
Greggs is a large, established company, so customers should expect basic things such as clear pricing, staff who understand the offers being advertised, and a straightforward explanation when something goes wrong.
I would strongly recommend that management at this branch review how these pizza deals are being processed through the till and make sure staff understand exactly what customers should be charged. If there are conditions attached to the £5.75 price, those conditions need to be clearly displayed. Customers should not see one price on the display, be charged another, and then be given an explanation that does not make sense.
Overall, a very frustrating experience that could have been avoided with correct pricing and better customer service.

What happens to your leftover food?
We’ve been donating unsold food for a long time. Originally our bakeries would team up with large charities who would help distribute it to smaller organisations.
This process remains in place, though we’ve also worked hard to increase the amount of unsold food donated by our shops and we currently support a network of 1,077 local good causes.
In 2022, we redistributed 1,800 tonnes of unsold food through our Outlet shops. A share of the profits from the outlets, totalling £450,000, was then donated back into the communities we serve.
We’re no longer taking new applications for end-of-day food donation partners, but we continue to identify regions where our shops could support a local charitable collection. To find out more or nominate an organisation visit: https://www.greggsfoundation.org.uk/unsold-food-donations.
Why do you have different prices regionally?
It is very common for retailers to have regional prices. This is because the costs of running a business can vary across different parts of the country and in certain locations, for example rent costs. We always keep our prices as low as possible for our customers.
