About

Bakery
Greggs is a British food to go brand, specialising in fresh bakes, sandwiches, hot drinks and sweet treats. Founded in 1939, Greggs started out selling eggs and yeast by pushbike, ten years later the first shop opened on Gosforth High Street, in Newcastle. Now, over 80 years later Greggs is a household name thanks to their tasty Sausage Rolls, Steak Bakes, Chicken Bakes, Doughnuts, Yum Yums and freshly ground Fairtrade Coffee. With shops across the UK, you're never far away from a Greggs. And with new offerings like Click + Collect and delivery to your door with Just Eat, it's never been easier to get your flakey fix. The Greggs App gives customers tasty rewards every time they shop. From sandwiches to sweet treats, hot drinks and bakes, each time you buy a product, you'll get a stamp. Collect nine stamps in a category, and the tenth item will be free. New customers can also get a free hot drink of their choice, just for downloading the app. The Greggs Foundation aims to build stronger, healthier communities across nine principle programmes including 'The Breakfast Club programme', which helps primary school children get a nutritious start to their school day. Today there are over 680 Breakfast Clubs across the UK, serving wholesome, free breakfasts to around 44,000 children every school day- that's 8.5 million meals a year.

Visited Greggs -not our usual preferred one, stood by the barrier and waited for them to open at 9am, an old orange haired lady (no name badge, but apparently called Susie) with glasses and a bad attitude spoke to us. Back turned to us, said rather abruptly, we open at 9am, we politely but jokingly said it is 9am, her reply ‘WELL WE ARE NOT READY’ and promptly walked off. Suggest people use the St Peter’s road branch instead, much friendlier. Just to add, the Tesco one is filthy dirty too.

The place is filthy. The high chairs are never cleaned, the tables are always dirty, the food is freezing cold and they don’t restock. Usually one person sits out the back doing nothing, occasionally checking to see if there’s customers, (probably on a monitor), before disappearing again. They’re not cooking more food, the shelves are almost always bare or with cold hot food. The festive drinks don’t have cream on top when they usually do elsewhere, but cold food is okay. The staff aren’t particularly friendly or welcoming, they just grab stuff and hand it to you before going away behind the scenes again. For customers coming into the store, it doesn’t even look like it’s open because there’s nobody in there and no staff to be seen until you come to the counter, and it’s not welcoming because most tables are filthy. Although the cold food is okay, the cold food to go in Tesco is cheaper with more options, so really the shop has no redeeming features and will likely go out of business if things don’t improve.

Typical Greggs fare, of course, but each time I've visited I've been presented with disinterested staff more keen on chatting than serving. The state of the dining area, with uncleared tables, detritus on the floor, and overflowing bins suggests an equally disappointing lack of care or pride in the site.

Frequently Asked Questions About Greggs

What are your opening times?

Opening times for all Greggs shops can be found on our Shop Finder. Just enter your location into the search bar to find opening times, contact details and available facilities.

What happens to your leftover food?

We’ve been donating unsold food for a long time. Originally our bakeries would team up with large charities who would help distribute it to smaller organisations. This process remains in place, though we’ve also worked hard to increase the amount of unsold food donated by our shops and we currently support a network of 1,077 local good causes. In 2022, we redistributed 1,800 tonnes of unsold food through our Outlet shops. A share of the profits from the outlets, totalling £450,000, was then donated back into the communities we serve. We’re no longer taking new applications for end-of-day food donation partners, but we continue to identify regions where our shops could support a local charitable collection.
