I was genuinely shocked to see how many traditional staffed checkouts have disappeared from Tesco in Buckingham. There are now only a few tills with actual members of staff, while more and more space is being taken over by self-service checkouts. I understand that technology is changing the way we shop, but surely customers should still have a choice. Not everyone wants to scan and pack their own shopping, especially when they are doing a large weekly shop. We are customers, not unpaid checkout operators. There is also a human side to this. Every time another staffed checkout disappears, we lose more face-to-face interaction and potentially more jobs. For elderly people in particular, a short conversation with a cashier may be one of the few social interactions they have that day. Technology should make our lives easier, not remove people and choice from everyday life. Keep self-checkouts for those who want to use them, but please keep enough staffed tills open for those who don’t.

The most miserable staff you could ever wish to meet! I was given a filthy glass and when I asked for it to be changed the girl just snatched it away, no apology! It also took a good while before she brought a plastic replacement. When the now plastic cup was brought out, it was slammed on the table without a word! It’s also cold, impersonal, and expensive! I will NOT be returning!
