One of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had.
My family and I have been loyal Tesco customers for many years and carry out most of our monthly grocery shopping at Tesco. In over 45 years of shopping, I have never felt so ignored, dismissed, and unwelcome as I did at Tesco Hodge Hill today.
At approximately 10:40 a.m., I arrived to do a large shop and needed a trolley. Unfortunately, I only had a £5 note and no £1 coin. I went to the customer service desk and politely asked if I could get change. I was told that the till was closed, so I offered to wait until it was opened again while another customer was being served.
Instead of trying to help, another colleague interrupted and told me that staff were not allowed to give change and suggested I buy a trolley key instead. I explained that I did not need or want a trolley key; I simply wanted change so I could access a trolley and complete my shopping.
The colleague, Nelly, then became dismissive and insisted that she could not help unless I purchased a trolley key. I felt pressured into buying something I did not need, which was extremely disappointing. What made matters worse was that when I politely asked to speak to a manager, my request was effectively ignored, and other customers were served while I was left standing there.
Eventually, another staff member called a manager named Bea. Unfortunately, she was equally unhelpful and simply repeated that I should buy a trolley key. There was no attempt to understand my concerns, no apology, and no effort to resolve the situation professionally.
The issue is not simply that I was refused change. It is the complete lack of customer care, poor communication, and dismissive attitude shown by both staff and management. As a result, I wasted around 40 minutes of my time, left feeling humiliated and frustrated, and ultimately abandoned my shopping altogether.
Tesco prides itself on customer service, but this experience fell far below the standard I would expect from one of the UK’s leading retailers. I hope Tesco investigates this matter and provides additional customer service training to ensure that no other customer is treated this way.
