  The SPAR on the Isle of Iona. Where do I even begin? The staff? Delightful. Positively radiant. I got not one, but two “hellos.” Two! In this economy! Honestly, it felt like being knighted. “Arise, Sir Customer, First of His Basket.” That alone earned them two stars—one per hello. I will not be taking questions. Now. The other three stars are currently in witness protection, hiding from whoever is in charge of pricing. Look—I’m not an idiot. I know Iona is an island. I understand geography. I’ve seen a map. I get that goods have to come over from the mainland, possibly via Mull, possibly via a series of increasingly exhausted men in kayaks passing eggs hand-to-hand like an Olympic event. I respect the logistics. I do. Infrastructure is hard. Boats exist. Weather happens. But explain this to me like I’m five and holding a mortgage: In what alternate, fever-dream economy does it cost THIRTY QUID for: a punnet of eggs a loaf of bread four tatties (not even a full emotional support potato squad, just four) a bunch of spring onions a bar of chocolate and two lamb burgers that turned out to be two days past their use-by date Thirty. Pounds. For that price, I expected the eggs to have been laid by hens with postgraduate degrees. I wanted the bread to whisper affirmations. The potatoes should’ve at least come with a backstory and a small documentary narrated by David Attenborough. And the lamb burgers? I assumed they’d been raised on spa treatments and classical music—not quietly decomposing like they’d given up on life sometime mid-ferry. It’s not a grocery shop—it’s a financial ambush with a fridge. And yes, I did what any reasonable person would do: I spoke to locals. I thought maybe I’d misunderstood, maybe this was normal, maybe I’d accidentally wandered into a luxury artisan boutique disguised as a SPAR. Nope. Every single local reacted like I’d just confirmed a long-held conspiracy. Nods. Sighs. The kind of haunted agreement you see in people who’ve stared too long into the abyss… or at a receipt. So there you have it. Lovely staff. Criminally polite. But the pricing? Less “island premium,” more “daylight robbery with a barcode.” Would I go back? Aye. But next time I’m bringing a small loan and a therapist.

  We got some really excellent fruit here. Ideal for the short trip across on the ferry. Lots of essentials here so if you are on the island it’s worth stopping here.
