We’re best known for our iconic bakes, fresh sandwiches, delicious hot drinks and sweet treats. Over eighty years ago, John Gregg started out with one goal: to deliver (by pushbike) fresh eggs and yeast to the families of Newcastle. Ten years later, he chained up his bike and opened Greggs of Gosforth.
Since then, we’ve opened more and more shops and have become something of a Nation’s sweetheart. Our menu has also changed with the nation’s taste. Long-standing Greggs fans among us may even remember the olden days before the hotly debated Vegan Roll, or our refreshing iced drinks.

At this point, “Out of Service” feels like the permanent branding. Then there’s the Sunday opening times — the website says 07:30, the shop window says 08:00, and I’m left standing outside like a confused extra in a sitcom. It shouldn’t require detective work to buy a coffee. And finally, the weekly arrival of the OAP invasion force. They descend like they’re storming a castle and immediately crank the volume to “public announcement system.” It completely takes over the space and makes it impossible for anyone else to enjoy the place. A little crowd and noise management would go a long way. Thanks for looking into all this — it’s becoming a bit of a SAGA.

We’ve been donating unsold food for a long time. Originally our bakeries would team up with large charities who would help distribute it to smaller organisations.
This process remains in place, though we’ve also worked hard to increase the amount of unsold food donated by our shops and we currently support a network of 1,077 local good causes.
In 2022, we redistributed 1,800 tonnes of unsold food through our Outlet shops. A share of the profits from the outlets, totalling £450,000, was then donated back into the communities we serve.
