Safari Lounge, which had been affectionally nicknamed “The Dead Animal Bar” by Islamorada locals, was a beloved Lower Matecumbe landmark for decades.
Now let’s fast-forward to today and: Breaking News!!!
Suntex Marinas came to the rescue with that much-needed TLC in the form of major renovations to the building; inside and out, throughout the property, everything from a brand-spanking new full kitchen with all new equipment, to a new and beautifully-landscaped private beachside lounge.
Guests will once again be able to enjoy delicious food & cool drink, both indoors and outdoors, all served up in casual comfortable classic Keys style. Oh, almost forgot, every cocktail comes with a spectacular ocean view!
Overall, customers enjoyed the food, highlighting dishes like fish tacos, shrimp, and key lime pie, though some found it overpriced or inconsistent.

Atmosphere
The restaurant's location and views were frequently praised, creating a pleasant dining experience, although some felt the decor lacked a true 'Keys' vibe.
Management Issues
Several reviews mentioned poor management and operational challenges, including reservation issues and staff shortages, impacting the overall experience.
Value for Money
Some customers felt the prices were high for the quality of food and service received, suggesting a need for better alignment between cost and experience.

Formerly known as the DAB (Dead Animal Bar) 😂 this locals spot has been purchased and completely remodeled. The atmosphere is certainly not what it was previously, but the ocean views will never go away.
We tried the chef special the day we were there, which were salmon, fish, tacos. I will say they were delicious! I know I know I know were in the keys but I just couldn’t resist. Trying the salmon. Very happy I did. Our server was friendly and attentive. The prices were , very reasonable.
I would recommend you stop bye and try it for yourself whether you’re headed south to key west or north going home to Miami. Located at mile marker 73 on the ocean side.

If you are looking for a place to eat, drink and have a good time come to Oceanside Safari Restaurant & Lounge. Best bartender to come see is Francois! Very attentive, talkative, hospitable and mixes the best drinks you will ever have. Shout out also to Shane (Restaurant Manager) made me feel welcomed, he was very attentive to all the guest that came in. made sure that every person that came in was receiving excellent customer service and happy with their orders. (All staff working at Safari makes the restaurant/lounge warm and inviting). It's definitely a place to come back to. :-)

I played there on their Tuesday Night JAM Open Mic 3 weeks ago and Liked the Fun and People so much I came back the following week. Tonight I will be Bringing my Amp to Play and provide for other Bass Guitarists That I have invited. Why? Simply because, They are a Great bunch of people and take very good care of Everybody Musicians Audience and the Simple pleasure of Nostalgia. And Patty is a Doll behind this Traditional Island Bar and I just love her and support her all the way. I am Retired here in the Florida Keys 7 years from NYC and I am having a Ball at this place and a few Like it here. Come and Listen Eat Drink and Meet a true Landmark and Fun place to be! Don't let this Rainy stuff stop you. And don't think I am easily impressed. I was a stranger made to feel like I was born around the corner!
