  This Safeway chronically has items past their best by dates on the shelf and most items are overpriced compared to the Safeway across the bridge in Alexandria. Make sure you check the dates on the items you grap, I had to switch out like 3 items the other day

  Service was awesome today from the short lines at self checkout to the excellent customer service the manger Anthony and Lee were both awesome my chicken was fresh and hot. Stop by the deli I’m sure you want be disappointed

  I went here early on a Sunday morning, about 6:30. When I got out of the car in approached the front door, there were a group of people out beside the door smoking laughing and just having a great time. I thought it was just some people hanging out from the night before. However, after I purchase my merchandise, I noticed the same group come inside the Safeway and they were all Safeway employees. If you're going to smoke a joke, why not just do it all back? And perhaps I missed the sink in the front of the store where they wash their hands before going back to stocking merchandise, but I don't think so.

  Prior to Wednesday, January 28th, I had no complaints regarding the customer service and overall experience of shopping at Safeway on Alabama Ave. Since my most recent experience, I refuse to go back to any Safeway. After a winter storm severely affected the pick up hours and my ability to retrieve the items I purchased on the app, I completely understood and respected the Safeway staff’s decision to close their pickup department for one day and continue to closer early for 2 other days. After 3 days of calling and chatting with this particular Safeway’s staff and corporate customer service to ensure I could either get a refund or pick up my groceries at a later time, I was continually told that I could not request a refund and that I would be able to pick up my items from the store at a later time. I was appreciative when I spoke with a woman from the store who informed me that I would simply be able to shop for the undelivered items. I understood this was not a normality but given the circumstances, I had no reason to believe this was anything other than an extended courtesy as a result of the situation. When I arrived at the store, I gathered my groceries. I got the attention of ‘Watkins’, a manager on the night shift who, when I explained the circumstances, called me a liar. Despite my repeated attempts to show her proof of this conversation and the Safeway app that indicated that my groceries had not yet been picked up, Watkins continued to assert that I was not being truthful and that I would need to pay for the groceries. Instead of making any attempt to corroborate what I was saying, Watkins proceeded to walk to the front of the customer service desk, lean on the on duty police Officer and talk about me while laughing. No grace. No understanding. Not so much as a respectful conversation from Watkins and as of today, January 31st, 2026, I have yet to be refunded for the $198.06 pick up order I placed. This was a humiliating and disappointing experience from what I came to know as my community grocery store and I am further disappointed that on a human level, Watkins decided that I was not deserving of a respectful conversation. It is not lost on me that this is a grocery store with a predominantly black staff which was one of the reasons I came here. It is disheartening to come to the conclusion that had I looked differently, I would have been treated differently. We as a community have got to be better. I, however, will not be shopping with Safeway anymore.
