I’ve been coming here for years and had found a favorite dish to the point that I didn’t even need a menu. I just learned tonight that they went corporate and made a lot of changes, including to a few of their signature dishes. My personal favorite was the southwest chicken tacos with the crispy fried onion strings. They used to be served like in a little metal taco plate nice and ready to go with good rice and beans. It’s completely different now and they got rid of the fried onion strings the chicken was not cooked well at all. It seems this wasn’t the only dish impacted. Chile relleno is gone. there’s no peppers in the restaurant anymore! Can you believe that? no peppers in a Mexican restaurant??? What is the world coming to? 😱
To try and be somewhat positive, the service was fine and their beer selection still remains pretty good, which is one of the only reasons why I didn’t give this a one-star. Still seems like a fun place to go, but for some drinks and some chips/salsa would be fine.
I’m not one that likes writing negative reviews. Just people need to know what’s changed before they go spend their money in these hard times.

I have loved On The Border for years. When we had one locally it was somewhere I would go a couple of times a month. Ours closed and when I found myself in the area I had to pick up lunch from the Rocky Hill location. I had not been since late October and was very disappointed to find that a lot of the recipes had changed. The rice was different, but comparable. The major problems were the changes to the chips, salsa, and queso. These were the three things that were OTB to me. They were what set them apart from any other Tex Mex restaurant. That has all changed. They have all been replaced by inferior recipes, likely to cut costs. The chips seem like they are probably out of a bag and just heated in house. They are no longer the long corn chips, but small white triangles that look just like Tostitos. The salsa has an almost pasta sauce taste, and the queso lacked the cheese flavor of the original and had a plasticly quality. I get that the chain isnt doing well and is probably trying to save money, but downgrading the things that made you famous seems like brand suicide. If you have never had OTB before you will probably be happy. The service is great, and the value for the food is still fantastic. But the quality has taken a nosedive and once the giftcard I have is done I cant see myself coming back.

Wonderful place to have a meal. Fast and friendly service. Food was amazing. I had the lunch boulder bowl with shrimp, and was excellent.
Specials on margaritas another plus. Very easy on and off the I91N.

I have gone to On the Border for years because they have my favorite tacos. Southwest Chicken Tacos. They WHERE delicious. Any chance I got I would go there to get them. I went there this weekend and they changed them. They used to have a perfect soft tortilla with thin sliced chicken and yummy onion straws. Now they have giant chunks of chicken too big for the shell, grilled onions, and the shell is crispy. They were inedible. Hopefully they will realize they made a mistake and go back to the original recipe. Otherwise, I will not be eating there anymore.
