As someone who has enjoyed and reviewed cuisine across the country, I can confidently say that The Spot Café in Groton, Connecticut is one of the state’s most underrated hidden gems. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by an exquisite staff whose knowledge of the menu, ingredients, and preparation elevates the entire dining experience. The owner is warm, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about what he serves—something you can taste in every bite. The food? Off the charts delicious. Portions are authentically family-style, generously served and beautifully prepared. Every category—appetizers, salads, main entrées—delivers excellence. The Bolognese pasta is a standout, rich and perfectly balanced. The pork chops are massive, tender, and bursting with flavor. And every appetizer I sampled was absolutely exquisite, crafted with the kind of care you only find in truly exceptional kitchens. If you’re in Connecticut—whether local or passing through—The Spot Café is an absolute must. A rare place where hospitality, passion, and culinary mastery come together flawlessly. I’ll just stick to the facts in this less than satisfactory experience. We miss our old spot first and foremost. The service wasn’t always great but the people for the most part were authentic. My kids were always kindly greeted and given crayons and paper to draw on and solve puzzles. The owner on some occasions would even bring over some popcorn for the kids. On this occasion the place was pretty much empty on a rainy day. The renovations seemed to have been completed. The waiter told us to just pick anywhere to sit. The table placement was for two with two water glasses and two small appetizer plates. The waiter came over and filled the glasses of water and provided us our menus and left quickly. My wife and I were quite surprised that he didn’t take a drink order before leaving. Once he came back he took our orders. My kids got chicken tenders and pizza. I got the tuna appetizer and burger. My wife got the empanadas. The food was good for the most part except for the pizza that my daughter had. It was worse the stuff in the school cafeteria back in the 80s. The most notable aspect to our visit was when my wife soda ran out. He came over and asked if she wanted a refill and she said yes. Then for about ten minutes her patient wore thin and I ended up getting up to go get her drink sitting at the bar. The waiter still no where in sight. When he eventually did reappear he was busy watching some game on the bar tv. That would have been a golden opportunity to recognize his mistake but instead the game was on and that was more important. Lunch was $100. Service was amateurish. The food isn’t nearly close to good enough to make us come back. There’s no warmth to this place anymore. Sad to see the old place go. Never thought I’d say I miss all the quirks, good and bad that made the old place work.

The Spot under the previous owner used to be our favorite date night location. The service was always good, the atmosphere was comfortable, and the food was excellent with a great variety of options. We were unaware of the change of ownership when we went this previous weekend. We were surprised to see the updates to the space. I didn’t mind that so much, except that our table was extremely wobbly; so much so that, any time we touched it, our drinks spilled everywhere. The service was excellent as ever, so I won’t put any fault there. They were out of the drink I wanted and instead of just coming over and asking me what I wanted instead, they brought me a different drink to try. The menu, however, was lacking all of the signature dishes that made the Spot THE Spot. It’s a much smaller menu, and the new choices lack charm and variety. I ordered the Classic Chicken Sandwich, which didn’t have any seasoning on the chicken at all. I couldn’t eat more than a few bites it was so unpleasant. My partner ordered the Teriyaki Pork, which was fine, but it had a mango salsa that was overly pickled. Overall, we were pretty disappointed. Our favorite Spot is gone. I know others will probably enjoy it, and that’s fine, but we won’t be returning anytime soon.

Wanted to try the new menu after the ownership changed hands. Pretzel sticks were good. Beer cheese was awful. Cheese was cold and tasted awful. Burger was an upgrade from before, but they took off a lot of good things from the old menu. Wife ordered penne vodka and asked for chicken, but the kitchen "refused" to substitute a chicken cutlet for grilled chicken. We are not in a hurry to go back
