I was in the Monte Vista Safeway today 3/27/2026 just before 3 pm. I had around 40 items in my basket so I went to the only open check out stand. The previous customer had just checked out & I had put all my items on the conveyor, when the young lady (that was the clerk) put up a sign at the beginning of the conveyor that she was closed. An older gentleman came up to get in line and she told him she was closed and then informed him that he needed to go over and ask for another clerk. WHY couldn’t see get on her phone and ask for someone??? She was closing and another one was needed, but instead she tells the customer to go get someone himself….??? Very poor customer service. She then started checking out my items. I had a coupon from the Safeway in Alamosa because I received my flu shot there. The entire time she was checking me out I held the coupon in my hand right next to the credit card scanner. She continued to take my items off the conveyor and push them further down. She chose to not bag the groceries in any of the sacks I brought, just continuing to push the groceries further down until it was full. She then started putting items on top of other items, choosing to not bag anything. By the time she reached the end of my groceries on the conveyor, she was having to hold my yogurt because she had no place to put them down. Early on I had put in my information and put in my credit card. I was still holding the coupon in my hand, but she had not engaged with me in any way. Suddenly she hit the total button & the receipt came out. I looked at her quite surprised as I was still holding onto the coupon. She never ask, “is there anything else”?? I showed her the coupon and she said sorry I’m done you can’t use that. I was still in shock, but then I was very angry. She said you should have told me you had a coupon. I said don’t worry, next time I will and I will remind you more than once. She had not engaged at all (except with the gentleman behind me to tell him to go get his own clerk). I closed my mouth, but went to the end and started bagging my own groceries. I was quite angry and threw my items into the bags I brought (totally unorganized as I usually put them on the conveyor quite organized for the clerk). She could tell I was angry and seemed stunned. She took the coupon from my son to look at it & I grabbed it from her. She looked over at the lady that was overseeing the self-check out and said well, maybe she could help. I said no thank you, I will deal with this when I get home and I will be calling the manager. I have decided to not call as I don’t know how to find out who the top manager/owner is and I don’t want to get a run around. I decided to post on google reviews. I find customer service extremely poor today. I choose to shop locally. I don’t go to Alamosa, I stay in Monte for probably 95% of my groceries & have done so for 22 years. To tell a customer to go find their own clerk----To not engage with someone you are checking out to make sure all is good with them ------ to suddenly decide this woman (me) is really angry, and she should see if someone could help her and make this right. Well, she should have done that to start with. I looked and looked for a place to send an email rather than call (because in calling I really don’t know “who” I’m talking with). Will I be back, probably. Will I use her as a clerk again. Not if I can help it. Very poor service or concern for customers. If the manager or owner wants more details, I’m sure they can find a way to reach out to me.
