From the moment you walk in the vibe The Passanger gives off is clear: This is a "New World" meets "Old World" kind of place, with a clear emphasis on World.
The owners pay homage to the building's historic roots as being both a bank on the first floor and an opera house on the second floor.
On the first floor where the restaurant is located there is ample seating across the many rooms (including inside the old bank vault!) and outdoor patio, at the center of which is a beautiful wooden bar with that old town kind of charm.
My wife and I had gone for brunch. First off, let me say that the service was superb. Our host was attentive, kind, and accommodating; so much so that he even gave us a tour of the old auditorium upstairs after our dining experience.
However, in terms of food, it was a little underwhelming. The presentation of the dishes were phenomenal; each one inspired by an equivalent dish from a different part of the world, but the flavor/texture was a miss more than a hit. I ordered the breakfast tacos, and the tortillas were somehow both overcooked and stale, my wife ordered the frittata and it was a bit on the dry side. The best dish by far was the spinach and goat cheese crepe, we'd absolutely order that again!
As far as price goes it's certainly competitive for the area, but one thing that irked me a bit was the extra charge for the back-of-house staff -- I completely understand why some restaurants choose to do this, but I wish they'd just increase the prices on their menu and pay their staff appropriately rather than both virtue signal to their customers and passing those costs onto them. As they say in French: "C'est la vie"
Will we back to The Passanger? Sure, and especially for a drink or three, but when it comes to the food and the overall experience our expectations will certainly be more tempered.
This is our 2nd time at this restaurant after the purchase from Dickens's steakhouse. Shortly after re-opening we went in, and saw that little had changed as far as the decoration, seating, etc. No problem, don't really care. The new menu was a bit limited, and many of the offerings have Indian seasonings/flavors. First trip there, waitress was nowhere to be found. Second trip, waitress was very attentive, but also may not have understood some of the nuances of food deliver. Ex1: our starters and mains arrived at the same time. This was fine, because the mains were TINY, I mean...if it was a tapas place, fine, but $30 for less than 4 ounces of cod, 4 slices of potatoes, and some super thin fried carrots......$30??? Really. I can go down the street to Pumphouse, or McSheas and get a full plated fried fish for less than that. I mean...it was so tiny, we had to talk to the manager about it, it was embarrassing. I had the chimichuri beef, which was done perfectly, the mashed potatoes were excellent, and the broccolini was very good. For the most expensive item on the menu, it was also, quite small. Truffled Parmesan fries, very good. Broccoli with tofu...TINY, TINY, TINY. The portions (except the fries) were so embarrassingly small, we had to order more food (golden beat salad, with two very small pieces of tofu (an upcharge). While we were eating, the owner told us about the "passport", we never received it, the previous visit, were promised the passport, again, never received it. He comp'd us a sweet potato tapas after we complained about the tiny portions. Nice of him...but alas, some fried sweet potatoes, does not make up for the $122 bill. For reference, we are globetrotters, and sample high end food over about 35 countries. This was a major disappointment. Here is my issue...the owner knows he has a problem, there restaurant is empty, he spent the entire meal service trying to hire employees (interviewing in the same dining room). He obviously has a high overhead, and is cutting food costs to cut corners, this is a losing strategy. Culture....cheap, cheap, cheap, cut corners, it doesn't work. For the same money, head over to Sugarbeet, it's high end, amazing staff, amazing chef. Sooooooo many options for this high price point, and you SHOULD NOT leave a restaurant hungry, and feeling cheated. Read the reviews, so many other feel the EXACT SAME WAY, the owner apparently does not learn.
