I'm guessing the you have the onions right next to the lettuce, so they get dropped in with it and wind up on your burgers. It's bad enough that I've never ordered a burger with lettuce that didn't have onions and I've eaten here 5 or 6 times. Please, for the love of people with allergies, be more careful about this.
