- AAAndre4 days ago1.0I had a very disappointing experience at Subway in Aspen due to the behavior of an employee named Aspen. When I entered with my service dog, Aspen immediately told me that animals are not allowed inside. I calmly explained that my dog is a trained medical alert service animal for a rare medical condition. Instead of handling the situation professionally, Aspen began questioning me about my condition and made several incorrect statements about service animals. He claimed that service animals are trained not to bark, shake, or exhibit certain behaviors, which is simply not accurate. Service animals are trained to perform specific tasks related to a person’s disability. Alert behaviors can vary depending on the handler’s medical needs. Under federal law, businesses are only permitted to ask two questions: whether the dog is required because of a disability and what task the dog has been trained to perform. They are not allowed to ask about the specific medical condition or demand documentation. Despite this, I showed paperwork in good faith, and the interaction was still handled poorly. The entire situation felt unnecessary and based on a lack of understanding of ADA guidelines. I strongly encourage management to properly educate and retrain staff on service animal laws and respectful customer interaction. No one should feel questioned or challenged while simply trying to order food. Please review your security footage and address this matter appropriately.
