Apparently the floral section closes before 7pm (even though this info isn’t listed on Google) & no one else is capable of blowing up balloons in the entire store.

I was trying to get a COVID shot at several other pharmacies around Boulder, with no luck, due to (they said) insurance restrictions. At Safeway an absolute gem of a pharmacist told me she would call my insurance to clarify and would call me with the results. The result? She was able to get my insurance to allow me to get the vaccine! Went in the next day and got the shot, no fuss, mo muss. Thank you!

I probably should give this store a one-star review. But I also know I can’t hold the entire store responsible for the actions of two people. Before writing this, I reached out to the corporate site to share my experience and never heard back. This review is the next logical step. If I don’t hear back again, I may contact the City of Boulder—but that’s not my preference. My preference is for the people I reference below to receive better training and reflect on how they treat others. The incident happened on September 12th. I stopped in just after 9 PM because my daughter needed the bathroom. My plan was to take her there and then buy her a small treat. When I asked an employee where the bathrooms were, he immediately said they were closed. Though the store wouldn’t close for almost two more hours, I took him at his word—despite suspecting otherwise. I was about to leave when I saw a manager rush toward three young Black men at the register. He immediately told them to leave or he would call the police. I stopped to listen. The young men had simply tried to buy gift cards. When they asked why they were being questioned, the employee said, “It’s just weird that all of you are trying to get gift cards.” I interjected and asked what made it “weird.” The manager, visibly shaken, replied, “I have the right to refuse service if I think something is weird. Leave or I’ll call the police.” I doubt he understands the danger of threatening Black men with police involvement when they’ve done nothing. To be generous, I’ll say it’s irresponsible and reflects a lack of training. As someone who works in community engagement, I reminded him that if he called the police, I would organize in response. The young men left, telling me, “Thank you sir. We know what this is, and we’re used to it.” That’s a heartbreaking statement—for Boulder County or anywhere. I don’t believe this reflects Safeway as a whole. And I’m mindful that the manager likely needs his job. My hope is that you treat this not simply as a matter for discipline but as a chance for staff-wide reflection on approaching customers with curiosity rather than suspicion. Those young men were college students visiting CU friends. With Coach Prime in town, more young Black men will be in Boulder. This is the time to prepare staff to welcome—not alienate—them. You may recall the Naropa student harassed by an officer while picking up trash near his housing, which drew national attention and the documentary This Is Not Who We Are. I’ve worked for years in Boulder helping people learn to engage across difference. What I saw that night was borderline abhorrent. The manager’s visible nervousness reminded me of too many moments that don’t end well for people of color. Please do better. Please acknowledge this message. Some have encouraged me to report to the City, but I am reaching out directly to you first.
