I am a regular customer at this Safeway, and while many of the staff are great, I’m extremely disappointed that I’ve had to deal with ongoing unprofessional and hostile behavior from one employee (Paola), if that's her name.
This employee has repeatedly refused to assist me when I’ve asked for help, even when she was clearly available. Instead, she routinely calls other employees to help me, causing unnecessary delays. If she's nearby she'll walk to the front or call someone else via walkie to help me and hands them her keys. On multiple occasions I’ve been left waiting 10–15 minutes for assistance with locked items. This is not a one-time issue; it’s a consistent pattern.
At checkout, she has deliberately walked away from the register when I approached and instructed other employees (sometimes those who were bagging) to take over instead. Most recently, last night, this happened again. She walked away as I approached the check out stand and directed the employee bagging to take over. It made me extremely uncomfortable. During this incident she moved over to the next check out lane just to start using her phone and going on social media which is something that appears to be a constant occurance. This occurred while on the clock and refusing to perform her essential job duties.
In addition, her behavior and demeanor toward me have been consistently unprofessional and hostile. This includes visible eye-rolling, ignoring when I ask for help or making me wait long periods of time, refusing to assist with locked products, not responding when I ask a question (she stays mute and walks away) and what appears to be negative commentary/gossip about me to coworkers while I’m in the store. One instance I did an in-store pick for groceries and she was slamming the grocery bags aggressively and angrily into my cart. This has created an uncomfortable and unwelcoming environment. It appears she also tries to influence how other staff interact with me as well. It's very visible unprofessional and hostile conduct. Which I'm sure can be seen through the store camera footage.
I’ve tried to ignore this behavior in the hope that it would stop or improve, but it has persisted and, if anything, gotten worse. As a loyal customer, I expect to be treated with basic professionalism and respect. This is not acceptable customer service, and no customer should feel deliberately targeted.
I've been made aware she treats other people this way. I’m sharing this because I hope management will take a closer look at what’s going on and address it appropriately. If she's going to be hateful, create a hostile shopping experience, avoid performing her essential job duties and harass customers then maybe she needs to re-examine her job role if she dislikes customers so much.
No customer should feel unwelcomed or harassed. As customers who come spend their hard earned money at Safeway, we should be treated with basic respects and fairness.
