Before I caught it, I swiped my card. Right after, my wife noticed the mistake and we asked for the transaction to be cancelled/changed. The cashier grabbed the manager, who took a look at the receipt AND THEN STARTED GRABBING CASH OUT OF THE TIP JAR to pay me back for the bagel. We quickly said no thanks, we’ll just take the bagel. Taking money out of tip jars to correct a transaction mistake is not legal in the state of CA. I doubt the manager meant any harm, but I worry that if they’re willing to just grab tip money there may be other shenanigans going on at the business. I’m sure everyone is minimum wage, so tips are important. I hope the employees are ok, this is on the owners to correct.

Having the to-go schmear containers on the other side of the register where nobody can see it doesn’t help. Such a simple thing, I can’t understand the logic, or lack thereof, of the management on this.
