Safeway is my go-to supermarket when I’m cooking from scratch. I’m a very savvy shopper and an avid home cook, and Safeway consistently has the best prices on meat and raw ingredients—especially when things go on sale. Today I scored great deals on pork chops, frozen wild-caught salmon, cheese, and fresh produce. I also love that Safeway is the only store I’ve found that sells whole wheat bagels. Bonus points for that!
I had a long shopping list and was able to get everything I needed. The new setup with one line that feeds into multiple registers is a huge improvement. As someone with a tight budget, I really appreciate not having a crowd behind me if I run into issues with my EBT or cards. It makes the experience less stressful and more dignified.
What really made my day was my cashier, Nathan. He was friendly, courteous, and went above and beyond—he even let me run back to grab something I’d forgotten while he was ringing me up. That kind of customer service matters. I used to be a cashier myself when I was 15, and I still remember how hard that job was. Long lines, impatient customers, and constant pressure. It’s often thankless work, so I want to give Nathan a big shoutout. He deserves recognition.
Safeway is always reliable for quality, affordability, and respectful service.
Oh, and the King Street location is the nicest and biggest Safeway in the Bay Area. It's ginormous!

I'll be completely honest with you; I usually went to this Safeway to get change. I would come in from the train station, grab a cheap and small breakfast item, scan it and let the self-checkout machine break up my large bill into smaller bits of change without giving me any shame, and leave as quickly as I entered. It was a win-win situation whenever I came here- I got my change and I got my snack without any hassle.
Imagine my surprise when I visited today and they have suited-up security posted up at the exits, a gate installed at the front, no more self-checkout kiosks, and pretty much no way to leave without seeming suspicious if you haven't bought anything. This kind of attitude towards shopping, where everything has to be locked up and monitored, is why I HATE going to grocery stores in the city. This nonsense just makes the process of getting something as simple as a yogurt in the morning twice as anxiety-inducing and thrice as long. It's the same reasons I've stopped going to Target, CVS, Walgreens here. I should have learned my lesson by now. Overall, 2/5.

Absolutely outrageous. This location is understaffed, so long lines are guarantee, and now they removed self checkout and keep the same staff and not enough open checkers.
So let me enumerate;
1. Most of the items in this store are locked, so you need to wait for someone to go pick them up for you.
2. Single line for all checkers.
3. Understaffed, so while you wait for someone to go open something for you to get an item, you also need to wait in a long line to pay.
4. Removed self checkout, so you have to wait behind people with full carts to pay for a carton of milk.
This doesn't make any sense.
