My fiancé and I recently dined here to celebrate a special occasion. It was his first time at Mastro’s, and having dined multiple times at the Newport Beach location, I had set high expectations for both the food and service. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short.
From the start, service was noticeably slow. Our drinks took an excessive amount of time to arrive. We ordered bread service when we were first greeted, yet it didn’t arrive until about 35 minutes later — after we had already received our Caesar salads. My martini was ordered dirty but came out without any olive brine, and my fiancé’s Old Fashioned tasted watered down, as if it had been sitting too long before being served.
When our steaks arrived, both were cooked incorrectly. I ordered a small filet medium; it came out nearly rare. My fiancé ordered a 12oz filet medium rare, and his arrived overcooked. Mine was taken back to be cooked longer, and his was refired. When my steak returned, it was well done — completely overcorrected. At that point, I asked for it to be removed and chose to simply eat the sides as my dinner.
While our server was apologetic, it was clear he was managing too many tables to provide the level of service expected at this price point. What was most disappointing was that no member of management came by to acknowledge the multiple issues at our table. Although my steak was removed from the bill — which was appropriate since it was not eaten — the overall experience felt subpar and far from the standard I associate with this brand. Given the cost and reputation, this was deeply disappointing and not reflective of the quality I anticipated.

Amazing tomahawk steak, incredible seafood. I would say that the crazy hot plate was too hot and actually cooked my medium rare steak and made my potatoes molten. Even that couldn't change how delicious the meal was. Lillie took such incredible care of us, her service was absolutely unmatched. She suggested great plates, was attentive and fun even when the restaurant got busy. She really made our night special. I'll definitely be back for my next occasion. Thanks Lillie/Lily, you are awesome. We really appreciated such great care.
I’ve been in the service industry for about 10 years now and really hated to write this review but they most definitely went out of their way to earn it. My fiancé made a reservation here on Feb 15 at 8:30pm for a post Valentine’s Day dinner. We were extremely dissatisfied with the service to say the least. The hostesses at the entrance were rude, dismissive and standoffish. They sat us at a 4 top table when there were other 2 seat tables available and the table they sat us at had a pick up tray laying on one of the seats in which my fiancé politely picked up and handed to one of the staff members. The server did not listen well and was not very attentive. The potatoes arrived cold. The table they sat us at was in a busy walkway and had people walking back and forth constantly which gave us extreme anxiety. We finally asked for our food to go and a disgruntled staff member came over to us rolling their eyes and complaining about how they had been working all day. I needed an additional box to go for another food item but felt uncomfortable asking as a result and ended up consolidating it with another dish. I was so embarrassed after bragging to my fiancé how upscale and nice this place was.
We chose this restaurant to celebrate my birthday, and unfortunately the experience did not meet our expectations, especially for a $400 dinner.
When the main dish arrived too quickly, my partner politely mentioned it to the server. We were told the steak would be re-fired and would take about 20 minutes. However, when it came back, it was still slightly lukewarm, which made us feel it may not have been properly re-prepared. We are unsure what the 20-minute wait was for.
The server did offer dessert as an apology, which we appreciated. However, when we left, the server did not acknowledge us or say goodbye, even though we walked right past him.
We had called ahead to confirm the dress code and dressed accordingly from the restaurant. My partner wore a long coat, yet there was no coat check service. Meanwhile, other guests were wearing white T-shirts and hoodies. The restaurant has both second and third floors, and we were seated on the third floor, while the second floor seemed to have a much nicer atmosphere. We were disappointed by that as well.
Overall, the service and experience did not reflect the level we expected from a restaurant at this price point.

Had such a wonderful experience here! What started as just a drink in the bar area turned into almost a full dinner. We began with wine and oysters, which were incredibly fresh and perfectly paired. The Caesar salad was crisp and well-balanced, and the bone marrow was rich, flavorful, and absolutely unforgettable — probably the best I’ve ever had, and I’m a huge fan.
We ended the night with the warm butter cake, and wow — the perfect sweet finish. Everything, from the food to the overall vibe, felt thoughtful and elevated. Shoutout to the singer who performed the Adele song I requested — such a special touch. Mo was an amazing server, and we also had the pleasure of meeting Dante, who was incredibly polite and easygoing.
Can’t wait to come back and try more from the menu. Highly recommend!
