Safeway's recent move to paper bags WITHOUT HANDLES is not in the interest of its customers. Paper is good. Having no handles makes no sense for anyone. It is difficult to imagine how any supposed cost savings would justify this change..

This is a place where I have shopped hundreds of times, and here are my observations. 1) Among the store staff, there are wonderful people who are friendly and do their jobs well. However, there are also disrespectful employees who dislike their work, wear sour expressions, and project their personal problems onto the customers. No one is obligated to love their job, but neither do they have the right to take that out on someone else. Ultimately, Safeway is a business—and it is the customers who keep a business alive. 2) In compliance with environmental regulations, Safeway has switched to using paper bags. However, these paper bags suffer from an issue with the adhesive. Even if you handle a folded bag gently while trying to open it, the paper frequently tears. Furthermore, the handles on these bags snap off quickly and spontaneously. Their decision to use cheaper, low-quality bags to cut costs is causing inconvenience to customers. Consequently, I have found myself having to argue with cashiers on several occasions. This problem is neither my fault nor the cashiers'. However, I suspect that—bored from sitting at the register all day—they are simply looking for an excuse to pick fights with people. 3) This store is significantly smaller compared to other Safeway branches. This situation reduces the physical burden on the employees. Despite this, most of the staff are very tense, aggressive, and odd! The 570 N Shoreline store is larger, yet its employees are definitely much more professional, respectful, and calm. There is a *huge* difference between the employees at these two Safeway stores. Safeway needs to establish minimum standards and requirements for every branch. Otherwise, they will suffer a serious loss of customers, much like Target. 4) I intend to report the points I have summarized here to Safeway headquarters. This is because I am someone who treats every employee with the utmost respect—approaching them politely and with a smile, and asking my questions apologetically. Naturally, I expect that same respect in return. We are all human, and we all go through very difficult times occasionally. However, I do not project my unhappiness or stress onto others, for I have no right to do so. A person who dislikes their job is free to resign and seek out a new position where they might feel happier. In short: the problems you experience in your private life or at the workplace are of no concern to us customers. Life is stressful enough as it is; please do not make it even more so.

I had to share this experience because it truly restored my faith in people. A few days ago, I accidentally left my purse at Safeway. It had everything inside, my ID, credit cards, and even my passport card. After searching everywhere with no luck, I honestly thought it was gone for good and started thinking about all the time and stress it would take to replace everything. Then today, I received a call from Jenny at Safeway customer service. She had found my purse. Not only that, she took the extra step to look through it, found my business card, carefully matched the name and photo, and made the effort to track me down and call me. She even told me she was hoping I would pick up the phone. I almost didn’t, I thought it might be a random call, and I’m so glad I did. When I came in, everything was still there. Nothing missing. Completely intact. It turns out my purse had been sitting there for days, and Jenny was the one who took the initiative to finally check and make sure it got back to the right person. That level of care, honesty, and responsibility is rare. I also met the manager, Courtney, who was incredibly kind and appreciative. She mentioned how often feedback tends to be negative, which made me feel even more strongly about sharing this. As someone in a service business, I know how much positive recognition matters, and how often it goes unsaid. Jenny, thank you for going above and beyond. Courtney, thank you for leading a team that clearly cares. This saved me an incredible amount of stress and meant more than I can express. If you’re shopping at this Safeway, know that there are truly good people here who will look out for you.

Safeway as always. Local look but big enough.
