On the way to our cottage up north on July 18, 2026, we stopped at Swiss Chalet for lunch. We timed it so our little one could eat and then fall asleep for the last leg of the trip since her nap is usually around 12:45–1:00 PM. We arrived at noon, figuring that would give us plenty of time to get in, eat, and get back on the road. Instead, we didn't leave until around 2:10. TWO HOURS - 15 min wait for a table
My partner worked at Swiss Chalet for several years, so we completely understand being short staffed and having busy days. But she said she never saw a two hours to turn a table. If the kitchen was backed up, just be upfront and tell us. We'd have appreciated the honesty.
When we arrived, we were told it would be about a 15-minute wait for a table, which was fine. The host left and never came back. There were two other families waiting behind us, and after about 10 minutes of nobody at the front, one of them actually went looking for someone. We were finally seated in the promised 15 minutes.
Our drink order was taken about 5 minutes later, and the drinks arrived roughly 10 minutes after that. One of the drinks was a chocolate milk, and for some reason it came with ice. Not a huge deal, but I don't think I've ever seen a restaurant serve chocolate milk with ice in it. The manger then asked if our order had been taken (I assume the person who took our food order was the manager because she was wearing street clothes). We said no and they too our order: Caesar salad, a dark meat chicken wrap, a BBQ pulled pork sandwich with loaded fries, and a kids' quarter chicken meal with fries.
After that... nothing.
We didn't see anyone for about 45 minutes. My partner finally went looking for someone and noticed that both families who came in after us had already received their meals and were halfway through eating. I have no idea if our order was forgotten or if one item held up the whole table, but not once did anyone stop by to say, "Sorry for the wait, here's what's going on."
About 5 minutes later our food finally arrived. The loaded fries were missing, which they corrected. When they brought those back, I noticed our toddler never got her drink, so we ordered it again. It never arrived, and we never saw the server again until it was time to pay.
The "pulled" BBQ pork sandwich wasn't pulled pork at all. It was just chunks of pork on a bun. Sure, I guess it had been pulled off the bone at some point, but that's not what anyone expects when they order pulled pork.
The rest of the food was okay, but our toddler's chicken was rubbery and clearly not fresh. She refused to eat it, and honestly, I didn't blame her.
We paid the bill, which came to about $75, and for obvious reasons left no tip. After we left, we realized we'd been charged for our toddler's drink and dessert, neither of which we ever received.
What really stood out wasn't even the food. It was the complete lack of communication. We totally understand busy days and being short staffed, but there was zero transparency about what was happening or how long the wait would be. Not once did anyone apologize. Not once did anyone acknowledge the delay.
Service-wise, this was honestly the worst restaurant experience I've had in my 48 years of eating out.
We won't be returning to this location. Save yourself the frustration and just grab something next door instead. It was a very disappointing experience.
