My daughter and I went there 1 day after her hand surgery. We had a basket full of groceries. The security guard stopped us and told us we were shoplifting. He made me pull out my daughter's pockets which had nothing in them. He called the manager. We asked her to see the video that the store manager swore she saw us shoplifting. She refused. We asked them to call the police. She refused. Then they physically forced us out of the store. Do not overwrite the tape. We were falsely accused and expect an apology. The security guard and the manager should be fired.
- SLSophie LairDec 1, 20251.0I am choosing to not shop at Safeway these days because the management at this location has decided to penalize locals for parking in one of Safeway's two parking lots to visit other local businesses. I am a member of Orange Theory (next door) and a Starbucks rewards member (up the road). I bought my cousin's birthday cake from Fat Belly Bakery (across the street) and bought my boss flowers from Montclair Florist (across the street). I have been a regular Safeway shopper for years, but in the past few months, they've hired an attendant to monitor those who park in the lot (instead of better staffing the inside of the store... customers -- including myself -- are waiting in long lines to check out). There was also one recent Saturday morning when I walked into Safeway to buy some breakfast ingredients and my husband walked to Starbucks to get us a coffee... the attendant chased my husband down and told him that he'd have to give him a ticket because he wasn't headed into Safeway. My husband told the attendant "My wife just walked into Safeway..." and the guy backed off. This whole "strategy" has really rubbed me the wrong way... and now that the attendant is monitoring the lots and giving out tickets, the lots are nearly 50% empty. The part that set me over the edge was last week when I saw the parking lot monitor standing there with a Starbucks beverage. Either we are allowed to "double dip" -- meaning we can use the Safeway lots as Safeway shoppers AND ALSO to support other local businesses -- or not. The whole thing is super unnecessary and petty. I have not shopped at Safeway since the attendant started monitoring the lot because the whole concept has so rubbed me the wrong way. Including a photo of how empty the lot is now that they have a lot monitor ….
