Very disappointing food-safety incident followed by even more disappointing handling by the franchisee. I complained after witnessing an employee sneeze while preparing my food. The incident occurred less than ten minutes before closing. Rather than create a confrontation at the counter while the employees were trying to close, I left and raised the issue afterward. I subsequently corresponded directly with Peter McMaster, who identified himself as the franchisee. I provided the information he requested so that he could investigate what happened. After looking into the matter, McMaster advised me that the best he could offer was two free 6-inch sandwich coupons. More concerning was his explanation. He wrote that because I was present when the incident occurred and noticed it in real time, I had an opportunity to raise the issue at the counter. He also cited company policy that refunds are not offered once sandwiches leave the restaurant unless they are quickly brought back. I found Mr. McMaster’s response remarkably dismissive. A customer should not have to confront an employee immediately after witnessing something that raises a legitimate hygiene concern simply to preserve the right to have that complaint taken seriously. Not everyone is comfortable creating a scene at a counter, particularly when something happens just before closing and staff are clearly trying to finish for the night. What bothered me most was that the discussion seemed to become focused on why I didn’t complain at the counter and why I didn’t immediately return the food, rather than the hygiene concern that caused me to complain in the first place. I gave Peter McMaster and the restaurant an opportunity to investigate and resolve the matter privately before making my experience public. Unfortunately, the eventual response left me with less confidence in how this location handles legitimate customer concerns, not more. Two free 6-inch sandwiches didn’t address the underlying problem. I wasn’t looking for an excuse to get free food. I expected a legitimate complaint involving food preparation and hygiene to be treated seriously and handled with reasonable customer service. In my opinion, telling a customer who raises this type of concern afterward that they should have complained immediately at the counter is not an acceptable way to handle the situation. I’m posting this review so other customers can know what happened, how franchisee Peter McMaster responded when the matter was escalated to him, and make their own judgment about whether they consider that response acceptable.
